Hello... and a question

Forum:

Hi,
I've just bought a '92 Fourtrak TDX SE; everything (even the air-con) works, except, obviously, the electric shocks but I have a few queries and would be grateful for some advice.
The car is fitted with alloy wheels and P255/70R15 tyres. I have a set of steel wheels from a F78 pickup with 215R15 tyres; will fitting these affect stability etc. Can I put the small ones on the front and leave the alloys on the back during the changeover (not keen on buying four tyres at once !).
The 4WD works ok but there is a clonking noise for about the first 20 feet after moving off, is that normal?

Hello and welcome Sam. Yours

Hello and welcome Sam.

Yours is an independent and these were designed for the larger tyres, consider that all steering and most of the braking is done at the front wheels and it would be sheer folly to put smaller tyres on the front as they have much less contact area, or in simple terms, less rubber in contact with the road.

Your clonking noise could be one of a number of things:

Propellor shaft universal joints are prone on these vehicles, basically they are designed to wear or snap as they are the cheapest component and the easiest to replace, so check all these and ensure they are fully greased, and grease them regularly.

Freewheeling hubs are prone, often its a lack of maintenance which allows them to fill with dirt or water, the dirt compacts and hinders their operation, and water obviously corrodes them internally, so check these and if necessary strip them and clean them, then fill them full of grease.

Independents have front driveshafts instead of a full axle, each driveshaft has two CV (constant velocity) joints, check these for wear and the rubber gaitors which cover them for tears or splits as this will allow mud and wet into them and destroy them in a short time.

Thqanks for the reply, mine

Thqanks for the reply, mine is not an independant, it's cart sprung. I've been wandering about underneath it and wobbling everything I can find... I think it's the auto hubs. I'll srip them when I've got time.
Nothing is clonking at the moment as the igtnition lock is jammed and I'm grovelling around under the dash trying to think of a cheap way of fixing it.
It's a pity it happened at home; I could have got the AA to butcher it for me!
