New and need help!!!

Forum:

Hello
I have just bought an R reg Sirion 1.0 automatic and have been looking round the net for service information etc and possibly a workshop manual so at least I know what needs doing when it needs doing and what I need to use in the way of engine oil etc. When I came across this site which seems really good and full of useful information so can anyone help me with some advice or point me in the right direction where I may get a workshop manual.

Hi Becci and Welcome, I'm

Hi Becci and Welcome, I'm pretty sure someone on here will have the Sirion workshop manual on CD, Infact I will need to get hold of it myself (Bob?!)

Oil for your engine, Any 0w40 (synthtic and expensive), 5w40(synthtic not as expensive) or 10w40 (mineral or semi-synthtic) will be just fine.

Avoid 15w40 though as that's quite a basic old grade and when the weather starts getting colder not so good for fast flow protection on cold starts.

The originally specified oil grade will have probably been 5w30, but stepping up to a slightly thicker grade on a engine with a few miles on the clock is wise. Less chance of engine using any oil and better protection for the parts that have worn slightly.

Mineral, Semi-synthetic, fully synthetic,...Just depends on your budget. Don't need to pay for a premium brand name, Supermarket own branded oil is perfectly decent these days and meets all the same specs.

Personally i would go for a 10w40 Semi-synthetic (or sometimes called "enhanced mineral"), expect to pay between £12-£20 for a 5 litre bottle, which is more than enough. (I expect you only need just over 3 litres)

Hiya Thanks for the reply and

Hiya
Thanks for the reply and the help!! Let me know if you manage to get hold of a workshop manual as I think this could be really useful to me. Another question which might seem abit dumb but what sort of auto gearbox does the Sirion have? and are you aware of any known common problems? Once again thank you for your reply Smile

1998 Sirion 1.0 Auto

As far as i know, The auto

As far as i know, The auto box is of conventional design, And hopefully should prove to be trouble free for you. Daihatsu are good at producing small automatic cars.

However it is always worth changing the gearbox oil, But unlike draining engine oil, You can never drain all the oil from a autobox so it's often good practice to change the gearbox oil twice (after a drive with the first oil change). Then any small remaining amount of old oil will be diluted by the fresh stuff.

Age related auto gearbox problems are usually down to lack of oil changes.
