Drained Autobox Fluid today on YRV Turbo

Forum:

Well I changed it - most of it anyway. Got it nice and hot and drained it out. Managed to get 2 litres out of it, then naughtily cranked it and got a bit more out. Refilled with same amount, checked level, drove for a few miles, drained and refilled again. Had a 5 litre can and have about a litre left so it's not worth draining a litre out and putting a litre in as I don't fancy the mess down my arm..........

Have posted pics of clean and dirty fluid in technical. I'm not sure what the colour fo the original fluid would have been, probably the same red colour I would imagine. Ideally I would of liked to have dropped the drain pan and clean it out etc but I don't have a ramp or a spare (I dare say expensive) drain pan gasket. Initially I thought it changed smoother, but I maybe imagining it! Anyway I did my best. I think the best thing to do is drain the two lires of ATF out everytime an engine oil change is carried out - that way it should stay reasonably clean etc. especailly every 3k miles.

Wayne popped some pics in

Wayne
popped some pics in Technical of the not much known about auto box filter. Its part number 35303-97201-000 for reference.
Maybe this can clog and cause problems??

Autobox "Strainer"

Rang main dealer today and asked for a price for the filter and sump gasket. They initially told me there wasn't a filter for the autobox, to which I corrected them, and she then said "oh its called a strainer not a filter on the system."
Price is £36 + VAT and the sump gasket doesn't exist as you have to use a liquid gasket???? Anyone know if this is true? Think I'll leave the filter for the time being - I'm skint at the moment. I will change it in a few months. My fluid is clean enough anyway..............

Cheers for that info Dave, is that your filter in the pic??? Sell it to me!! Wink

Dave, That's a good result.

Dave, That's a good result. Thanks for doing the research. I too would be interested in buying this part. I am wondering if this got changed on my last autobox service.

Cheers,

Jon.

Just stumbled across it when

Just stumbled across it when looking at a parts breakdown of the box. Searched the net and found some pics of it.
Expected the price be more than Wayne's quoted although thats still alot of money for a bit of plastic!
Had a look at the parts CD and it doesnt show gaskets for either oil pans......tube it is then.
Jon, i was quoted around £170 to have the gear oil changed at my local dealers and woder now if that included the strainer...if not alot of money just to drain and fill. Doubt they did yours as little is known about it.

By the Way..........

I forgot to mention that if you order one it will be on back order...........up to 4 weeks I'm told unless your local stealer has one on the shelf - unlikely lets face it. I am not TOO worried at the moment as i have at least done the oil and my cars only done 27k so hopefully it will be ok. There's an autobox "specialist" in Preston who wanted £110 iirc for a box service. They RECKON the filter would be done too. Bull**** I say as they would a) need a price from a dealer and b) need to know availability BEFORE they could quote me let alone book me in. It would of been a drain and fill and that's it - guaranteed. I don't trust any garage any more. Engine oil and plugs to do next. Box oil/strainer can wait until I feel flush............;-)

yrv turbo auto fluid change

Our yrv turbo has just turned 30,000 miles and is now approaching 8 yrs. The auto gearbox has started to drip on the drive from around the pan joint. So today I drained the ATF and removed the pan. My experience was much like waynes, with the fluid previously looking red on the dipstick but when it drained out was pretty dark. I managed to get 2.5 litres out plus a bit more by removing the pan. The interesting bit was the filter (I had not seen the posts about this! doh!) and also the magnet in the pan. The magnet was covered in grey gunk and when touched went spikey because of the magnet. I cleaned all this out. I wish I had got a new filter (strainer) although I must admit getting parts for Daihatsu is not easy. The pan seal is just a liquid gasket and cleaning the old one off took a while. I refilled and drove and then redrained another 2.5 litres and replaced with new fluid so should be ok for now. Removing the pan is a pain, as the design is naff as you can't get to 3 of the bolts without dropping the gearbox from its mount. While I was waiting for the fluid to drain, I too noticed some rust on the bonnet slam panel, so removed this too!

Sounds like a pain to do. If

Sounds like a pain to do. If you order a filter it would be on back order - 4 weeks unless a dealer has one in (unlikely).

Will get round to doing the filter one day.................
