YRV Turbo Air Con - Fixed

Forum:

Well happy now. One of the A/C pipes was leaking on the sight glass when I got the car last year and I had tried to seal up the leak with no luck. Got a new pipe from DaihatsuDave (cheers matey) and fitted it last night. Had to drop the left side of the front bumper so I could remove the pipe. Wasn't too bad a job just a bit fiddly wiggling the pipe out from behind the headlight and battery. Fitted pipe, pressure tested system, evacuated and charged. No more leaks and blows very cold now. Done Smile

Daihatsu Dave the 5th Emergency service ;-)

Good to hear Wayne. Just fitted the passenger side recaro seat this weekend. I'm now officially knackered Smile

Coldishness

I'm a mechanic and service AC as part of my job. Daihatsus are built light and efficient - that's why I like them! I recharged my Sirion's AC and it's working well... but it's not exceptional like some AC systems, presumably because the evaporator (cold thing in dash) isn't very big.
To get your car cool inside ASAP, drive a minute with the windows open and AC on. Close windows, fresh air, fan on speed 3. A few mins later switch to recirculated air, lower the fan speed too. This allows air more time to cool as it passes the evaporator. To prevent stale air, the fresh / recirc knob can be left halfway to blend fresh and recirculated air
For an economy car, it's certainly alright

How to use your aircon

Strangely Goosegog, when I was looking for a west-of-London stainless exhaust company, I came across this website

http://www.stainlessworks.co.uk/Stainless-Steel-Exhaust-Systems/Stainless-Steel-Sports-Exhausts-and-Decat-Systems-for-Daihatsu-YRV.htm

It's a loooong page, but near the bottom it gives advice on the most efficient use of aircon....almost the same as your description. I therefore presume that you work for this company!

Very cold?

Wojamene Wayne, 'very cold'? Glad you've been able to repair your leak, but this aircon is really just a gentle cooler Daihatsu told me when I complained about its ineffectiveness. Their official test seems to be to check that the air temp at the vents is c.5 degrees Celsius, which isn't what you'd call very cold. I've found it just about takes the sting out of very hot days - even when it was new.

Have you found a secret boost?

OK, maybe I exaggerated No,

OK, maybe I exaggerated Wink No, seriously it is working very well indeed. There is a pic of the job under technical. Here's my two penneth worth Wink

A Vehicles' controls should be set to recirculate for the a/c to work properly. Only trouble with that though is the air gets stale quickly. Drawing in hot air from outside on fresh air in setting is not ideal. It's the same principle of leaving the fridge door open/having an air conditioned office with windows wide open really. You want to keep as much of the already chilled air within the said space. Vent temp will vary on ambient temps on fresh air in setting and car temp/ambient temp on recirculation setting. Also depends on refrigerant charge/system efficiency etc.
Our cars work on a pressure switch. When the suction/return pressure of the gas reaches approx 10 psig, the system stops, then it starts again when the standing pressure rises to approx 35 psig. This is why on really hot days the system will run longer before cutting out as the gas is absorbing more heat and therefore the pressure is higher. On very cold days, the system won't run at all, as the standing pressure in the system is not enough to "make" the pressure switch. Yawn. Now I will take my fridge engineer's hat off.

Jon, pleased you have done the other seat, now they match! Any pics?

How easy was it to take the front bumper off?
