Forum:
Hey chaps. I'm thinking of adding a YRV to the fleet (I currently have a Sirion Rally IV) and I have some questions
Is the 1.3 engines they have are the same, yes? How come the Sirion is listed at 101bhp and the YRV only 85bhp? What restricts the YRV and why?
Do the YRV Turbos have the same engine + turbo? Why are they only auto?
Do the rear seats in the YRV fold completely flat?
Cheers! Ferg

Some Answers
I am not sure of the power differences. If your Rally is 101 bhp, then I'm sure it's down to different camshaft profiles and possibly some other tweeks.
BobF on here will tell you as he has a Rally IV too. Both 1.3 units are the K3-VE engine, same engine as the Toyota Yaris, except that Daihatsu used their own variable valve timing setup - the DVVT - as opposed to the VVTi Toyota used.
The Turbo engine is the K3-VET engine. Basically the same engine but with, as far as I know, uprated oil pump, different pistons, uprated radiator to deal with the extra heat from both the turbo and the transmission, and obviously different electronics/setup etc plus a few other differences - and of course, a turbo. The Turbo is an IHI RHF4 Ball Bearing Turbo. (As far as I'm aware)
The reason they were only fitted with an auto box was because no manual box that Daihatsu had at the time could handle the power/torque. Apparently the manual box they tried only lasted a few thousand miles..............so I read somewhere. In the turbo version, you can put it into "Steershift"" mode whereby you can select gears via steering wheel mounted buttons, this gives a lot more control and the cars go alot better in this mode too!
The YRV's rear seats fold pretty much flat (as far as I can remember, it's been a while since I used it as a van) and the seat bases are fully removable too allowing the backs to fold flat or almost flat (someone please correct me)
Hope this answers some of your queries. Others will be along to correct me/add to this!

2004 Yellow YRV Turbo
Your right Wayne.
As for the power differences between the Rally IV you have and a standard YRV Premium/Radical is that Daihatsu decided to try to make some special edition cars and employed a 3rd party to get more power out of the standard k3-VE engine, therefore a few tweaks, better flowing air-filter and hey presto more Bhp and the Rally 2 and 4 was born. If you were to buy a standard Sirion 4-trak or SL/EL etc.. then you would have the same power as a 1.3 16V YRV.
Basically the Sirion and YRV share a lot

Not Rally
Hold on, I'm not comparing the Rally. I just have one..
I'm comparing the YRV 1.3 to the Sirion 1.3
85bhp - 101bhp

They say 88 VS 100 bhp
Why the difference?
I think...
Both the YRV and the Sirion use the same base engine (Same as the Toyota Yaris I believe) however I believe that the Sirion uses a different crankshaft and a new program. So the compression is different giving it a higher BHP. I think its something like that anyway...
Compression
Ah, looks like you're right there. YRV compression ratio 10:1 whereas Sirion is 11:1
The 1.3 Yaris has the same power (and +100 kgs) as the YRV so Daihatsu really squeezed a lot of power out the 1.3SL Sirion at 100bhp and didn't make much of a song and dance about it. It's similar in performance to even the 1500cc Yaris T-Sport with better power-to-weight. Good old Daihatsu!
Cheers for your input
Power!
The Sirion 1.3SL is 101bhp and the Rally has a huge power increase over that of an impressive 5% to a mighty (get this) 107bhp! I'm glad mine's 4WD or else with all that extra power it'd get away from me
Seriously, though 1.3 YRV and 1.3 Sirion, you'da thought would be pretty similar. It makes you wonder if an ECU swap plus better induction would bring the YRV up to spec
All very useful thanks Wayne, cheers. That's a puny gearbox that can't handle an extra 30bhp. Takes me back to my MG Metro Turbo days!
