cheap mods to sportrak

Forum:

Hey there, my names Mark just bought myself a G plate sportrak to use for offroading and work. had a sj before with a swift gti engine in it but put it on its side so need something a little more refined and not bent!!!!

took the sportrak greenlaning and it was ok but tender with it at the moment and also its dead boring being so dry

I need to know a few things if anyone can help:
what size tyres can you get on a sportrak? was going to swap my sj's mt colways over but they are 195's and the standard are 215's so it does seem a little silly to downgrade! various places have larger sizes in the imperial size but i dont know if they will go??

also a jack up of the front suspension seems dead easy how high can you go?
also to raise the rear how much longer do the shackles need to be made?? saw some for an sj which were 7" long but didnt state the lift?

also any ways of making it go much faster? its a bit flat compared to the gti engined swift!

anyways cheers for your help in advance

Sportrak Mods

Hi Mark,

Regarding tyres on a Sportrak, 195R15 are the standard size, so yours has already got slightly biggger ones on it. I think general opinion is you are ok up to 225's, and some say 235's are ok, others say they scrub on full lock, but i think its dependant on what treat pattern and how much tread is left on the tire!

Not sure exactly how far you can go with the front suspension, but others on here will help with that. Same goes for extended shackles.

Regarding performance, i think the usual applies... K&N or other free-flow air filter is a good start (standard air filter is a right maze of pipework!).

No doubt you'll get other replies about which mods to go for!

Good luck,
Nat

sporti

225 is fine, 235 will fit but will touch. you can raise the front torsion bars to max to give 2" lift and then put 4" extra shacles on the back. dont know of any one who makes them tho, want a pair myself and i think i will have to get them made at an engineering shop.

Ait filter, k&n it is better for the air flow but waste of time off road as it will get covered in muck and even worse, water. The stock filter aint to bad in water.

A good site for advice is www.outerlimits4x4.com

Also if david (bundyrumandcoke) sees this i am sure he will reply. (The ozzies are a bit of a feroza (sportrak) gods, with some mental mods.

235/70R15 will fit fine- that

235/70R15 will fit fine- that's what I'm running on my '92 narrow track ELIII on 15x7 inch rims (but should be fine on standard rims too). My suspension is all standard height.

ideal cheers for the info, so you actualy lift the back by 4"?? planning to lift it up smack some big tyres on then go find some mud!!
air filter wise has anyone fitted a snorkel to one of these??
cheers, boys!!

SHACKLES

4" LONGER SHACLES WILL GIVE A 2" LIFT. SO BY LIFTING THE FRON (WIND UP THE BARS) AND THEN ADDING 4" ON THE BACK WILL GIVE A 2" LIFT ALL ROUND.

ONE OTHER THING TO DO, IMMEDIATELY, IS TO REMOVE THE FRON SWAY BAR (ANTI ROLL BAR) AS THIS IMPROVED THE FRONT NO END.

2inch lift

What effect, if any, does a 2inch all round suspension lift have on things like shock absorbers, prop shaft angles, etc? Any problems likely?

I'd have thought wheel spacers or wider wheels would be a good idea if you make the centre of gravity higher?

All these ideas.... (if only i had a second car!!)
Nat

lift

Have not done it on a sporti but from what i can see you wont have a problem. As you are raising the ctr of gravity, wider track is a good idea. go as wide as poss to give stability.

Ahhh Pete, my forte is really

Ahhh Pete, my forte is really Rocky/Fourtraks, but I will put my 2 cents worth in. The torsion bar wind up seems to be fairly popular. A corresponding 4 inch shackle extension for the rear. Even better is fitting a set of Revolver shackles. Remove the sway bar. See if you can get some wider, or more offset rims. Then again, if the wheel spacers are legal over there, then thats another option. Why not look at a body lift as well, these are easy to do, and pretty cheap, and give instant clearance both for tyres and ground. If its not constant 4wd, then weld the front diff, seeing as how lockers are not available. This option is much better if you have power steering fitted. Of course, aggressive tyres help. I run 2 complete sets of rims and tyres, A/T's for road work, and Simex M/T's for offroading. On long road trips to off road events, I trailer the M/T's to the event, then change them over. That also beats some of the legal issues over here regarding too large tyres fitted on road. A snorkle is a good idea, but will have to be a custom job as kits are not available. I dont go for the idea of K&N pods for off road work, unless they are run in the original air cleaner can, as they quickly clog with mud and water.

Cheers
David
