Forum:

My other half is under the car as we speak and he wants to know how do you realign the gearbox. I have read just about everything on here and cant really find anything. I know how the fix the reverse gear and where to find the filler nut for the gearbox but nothing on aligning the thing. Can anyone help PLEASE?

CLUTCH ALIGNMENT

THE MALE SPLNES ON THE GEARBOX SHAFT HAVE TO ALIGN WITH THE FEMALE SPLINE IN THE CENTRE OF THE CLUTCH FRICTION PLATE. ASSUMING YOU USED AN ALLIGNMENT TOOL TO ENSURE THE CLUTCH FRICTION PLATE WAS CENTRALISED BEFORE YOU TIGHTENED THE PRESSURE PLATE BOLTS UP THEN THEY SHOULD ALLIGN . sSMTIMES SWIVELLINTG THE BOX ON IT'S AXIS WHILST OFFERING UP THE SHAFT WILL ALLOW THEM TO ALLIGN. USE A TROLLY JACK TO LIFT THE BOX INTO POSITION AND ENSURE THE ENGINE AND GEAR BOX ARE AT THE SAME ANGLE.

Alignment

In addition to Oldminiman's comments, sometines it is prudent to turn the output shaft on the gearbox, with the box in gear, this will also line the splines of the gearbox input shaft with the splines of the clutch friction plate.

Frustrating jobs.

First time or frustration!
The friction plate needs accurate alignment before inserting the gearbox shaft. Use a length of dowel or file-down the diameter of a broom handle. Sometime a rumage in a drawer will find the correct sized diameter bolt! Align the friction plate to the fly wheel using the dowel.
Aligning splines can prove frustrating. Often the gearbox shaft gets caught on the friction plate's splines. Pull out, check plates alignment and retry. Apply a thin smear of copper grease onto the splines. Trail and error!
If it proves hopeless, take a break and a coffee.. Usually the bassstard will go in next time !
