Has anybody fabricated their own side bars? I have seen some for sale but i dont want to pay £185! I'm thinking some steel tubing welded onto the side of the chassis. If anyone has done this themselves, pics would be very useful!

Side bars
Made more than i would care to admit too, but the criticism bit comes now.
Do net weld them to the chassis, if they become damaged or need removing for any reason it will be a matter of cutting them off.
Two options are available:
If you are a competent fabricator, make up mounting brackets and weld these to the chassis, use spreader plates to disperse the load along the chassis and ensure nothing is lower than the chassis. When off road these catch on anything such as rocks and can tear them off, make the bars and bolt them to the mounting brackets, use substantial material to prevent then bending, particularly on the mountings.
If they are simply for show and the vehicle is not used off road, simply weld steel strap to one end of the bars, drill another length of steel strap and clamp them around the chassis.

I want these for a bit of protection offroad. Thanks for your help. Are you a component fabricator?

sill protection
Hi Sam,
the easiest way to get some sill protection is to cut a section out of the sills and weld in some steel tube or box section. If you are unable to weld these in yourself though you may find the cost is still quite high. Another cheap option is to drill through the outer and inner sill and bolt on a peice of angle to stiffen the sills, it would need six or seven bolts through if your car is LWB, one or two less if it's SWB and the angle will need to be at least 5 or 6mm thick, you should use spreader plates on the inner sills to prevent the bolts pulling through under load. If you want to get some ideas try looking at some american 4x4 websites as there seems to be a lot more interest in home builds over there.
best regards
Dave.
i have
Yer ive made some sam, using nearly new land rover freelander side bars of all things, got them for £40 from a landi event (reckon nicked cos nearly brand new really), just cut to length, new brackets, welding etc but unless your competant at doing mig welding, metal cutting etc then it might take you a while.
Full of ideas but no time to do them!!
