Forum:
This topic has probably been covered many times before but could anybody tell me of the problems that I may encounter. I have a 1985 F50 5 speed on 31 x 10 tyres with a custom galvanised steel and aluminum body. I built this about 10 years ago and it will probably last forever! However the engine blew this week and although I have another 2.5 I would like to fit a 2.8 turbo for the extra power. Could anybody please tell me what modification I will have to make for this conversion and if there is any difference between the early and later versions of the 2.8 turbo.
Thanks.

The 2.8 will fit very
The 2.8 will fit very easily. Main points:
Bell housing bolts straight up (same block).
Engine mounts from the 2.5 need to be unbolted, and bolted to the 2.8, as the 2.8 mounts make the engine sit higher.
Exhoust needs to be cut, and modified.
You'll need a 2.8 Terbo Aultinater, as the vaccum pump on the rear of the 2.5 version is too bulky, and will try to occupie the same space as the Terbo.
Lift pump is electronically opperated, not mecanical. Just need to run an 'ignition' wire to it.
Think that's about it...
As for early and later 2.8's the only diffrance I can remeber off the top of my head is that the earlier ones are timing chains, and the later type uses a belt.

2.8 turbo
Thanks for the info. So there does'nt seem to be any major problems. Do you reckon that all the exhaust has to be changed to one with a bigger bore - I would like to retain the present system as it is stainless steel? The other issues that I can think of is the throttle cable, air breather and the stop solenoid.
I am considering whether to buy an engine only or look for a whole donor vehicle as it might be handy for any extra bits req.
I intend to keep the F50 for a long time so I will be looking for an excellent engine - is there anybody out there that can help?
Regards
The exhoust bore would be
The exhoust bore would be the same I think. The problem is the physical positioning of the exhoust manifold outlet. It's not in exactly the same place. You could I guess bye the correct stainless downpipe, and using stainless wire, cut and weld it into the old system. Done this many times with normal exhousts.
You may be right about the trotel cable, now you mention it. Not 100% sure, but I think it's a diffrent conection at the engine end, but the same at the peddle end.
Stop is no problem. 2.8 is electronicly switched. The 'ignition' wire I mentioned is just an on / off switch wire from the key to operat / stop the pump.
I'd deffinatly go for the whole vehicle. As there are bound to be small diffrances I've forgoten, and there are other things that are of use.

Thanks Nev.K youve been a great help.
This custom body. Does it
This custom body. Does it look like the original? Or is it a whole new creature of your own imagining? Have you posted any pic's?

Custom body
It is a body that I designed and built (12 years ago now) myself on a gavanised steel frame clad with 2mm thick aluminum which has never been painted.
The only original body parts are the inner front panel, inner wings, dashboard and the windscreen surround. It has a canvas top and an anti roll cage with removable Land Rover Series 3 door tops. The body is 80mm wider than standard with 8" wide wheels with 31-10 Tyres.
I will try and post some pictures soon.
Sounds cool. Got ride of
Sounds cool. Got ride of the one thing that realy let the earlier Jap stuff down. Planning (one day) to do something similar. Though I'm intending to use a Landrover body. Already ali. And construct my own bulkhead, as Landi ones tend to be crap, and a Daihats one would be totaly the wronge shape.

Picture of F50
I have uploaded a picture of my F50 to the gallery, taken about 3 weeks ago - before the engine blew! I have a libary of photos which I took of the build but they are all on film. If there is any intrest I will get them scanned and put in the gallery.
That looks fantastic!
That looks fantastic! Diffrent to the original, but close enough to recognise. Very nice looking motor. And a B reg. Wern't many sold on that plate to begin with. 5 Speed? Disk breaks?

F50 spec
It actually started lfe as an F20 (petrol) but when I bought it as as MOT failure the previous owner had fitted it with a diesel engine. It was a four speed with discs but had the original axles which made very low geared. When I built the new body I changed the axles for the correct ones and about five years later I sourced a five speed box and another engine. I am still desperate to source a 2.8 Turbo Fourtrack for parts - can anybody help?
A mate did the F20 to 50
A mate did the F20 to 50 swap himself. He jacked it up a bit and put 33/12.50-15 tyres under it. Still low enough geared to pull a house over, but high enough to save the fuel costs. Or as good as a 4x4 is likely to get...

My F20 to diesel conversion
I'm in the middle of converting my F20 to diesel with a 2.8 turbo unit from an '86 Fourtrack. It was a pretty good fit around the bulk head but my home made inner wings needed cutting to accomodate the oil filter which sticks out horizontally on the engine I bought. Hefin has been much more faithful to the original shape of the vehicle than I was and it looks great. I've put a picture of mine in the images gallery next to his. By the way Hefin, with a name like yours I expect you're in Wales somewhere, I'm in Bridgend, anywhere near?

Conversion
Hi Alastair. I'm actually in North Wales near Corwen. I will be very interested to know how you get on with the conversion, you've created an awsome machine - looks really good. Maybe you could post some more pictures when its done.
Conversion
Not very near then !!
Finished off welding in the new mounts today, then spent about 3 hours tidying the garage so I could find all my tools again. I'll put some paint on them tomorrow and get the engine in, hopefully for the last time. I've got a week off this week so my plan is to get the engine running at least. When its all done I'll post a build thread with links to some pictures.
Regards - Alastair.
Been Converted
Nev has just about covered everything, what i tend to do with the exhausts is to make a stainless steel unit, parts are available from Milners or Jetex exhausts, as they are a different bore. If you have access to a MIG welder, it would be prudent to make the new exhaust from stainless, you would only have to do this once, and not have problems in the future. While making the exhaust, fit skid plates to all silencers and other vulnerable areas, these will deform and save the exhaust system itself, these are easy to replace.
Throttle cables are easy to modify, cut the nipple off the 2.8 cable and drill it out, solder this to the 2.5 cable.
Custom bodywork
I can only echo the comments regarding the bodywork, very impressive results. Alastair yours looks great fun as well.
