Forum:
I have a Fourtrak fieldman 1996 N struggles a bit to start from cold you have to let the glow plug light go out and give a bit of throttle and away she goes coughs and splutters a bit ( presumably because youve given her the throttle) i had thought may be glow plugs but these are fine having tested them, now ive only just bought the vehicle to pull my trailer so exuse the lack of knowledge, there is something (relay?) bolted on to the inner wing drivers side that has two wires going to it held on by 10mm bolts that clicks on and off for the first 30 - 60 seconds i had presumd this is for the glow plugs so put a tester up to the glowplug bar when the relay thing is clicking it's giving the glow plugs power in short bursts, i was on the understanding with diesel cars when the ignition is switched on the glow plugs stay live permanatly untill the relay clicks off thus igniting the diesel, is this the same on the fourtrak if so then the relay is faulty and i,ll get a new one as it would explain the poor cold start as the glow plugs are not being given a chance to heat up hence why you have to give the old gal fuel, Please could somebody advise me cheers Dan

i had the same problem,
i had the same problem, tested my glowplugs they seemed fine but replaced them anyway, now starts first time and runs smooth on start up.
same vehicle, similar
same vehicle, similar problem in the cold running 50/50 veg deisel, all i do is turn the key to have the heat plugs reheat 3 times, she starts no problems
Cooler
Glow plug relays are temperature controlled on most models, the engine temperature controls the time the relay is activated, basically, when extremely cold, the relay stays on for longer, when the engine is hot is shortens the glow plug time.
Fourtrak glow plugs are either 7 volt, or 7.5 volt; check that they have not been replaced with 12 volt items, they will not get enough power to make them heat sufficiently, or for long enough.
Never use the throttle when starting, this provides too much fuel into the combustion chamber and literally cools the glow plugs in the same way a hosepipe cools glowing steel.
Check the fuel system, basically the non return valve is prone to faults on the fuel filter housing, this lets the fuel return to tank and takes some cranking to get it back to the fuel filter. Fuel from the filter is initially used to start the engine, this then runs out and uses a mixture of fuel and air from the fuel pipe.
