Forum:
My Fieldman 2.8tdx seems to have turned into a bad smoker every time the revs go over 2000rpm.As I don't know much about turbo chargers (at least that's where I think the problem is) I could do with a little advise on whether it's worth trying to fix it or just to get a replacement unit? Its getting a little urgent as I am sure I left the odd car in the dark with the stuff that came out of my exhaust... Cheers

Black smoke or blue? Could
Black smoke or blue?
Could be the injectors.
Colour of the smoke?

additive.
If its black smoke then suspect an injector[s]. If vehicle has done high milage then the injector[s] could be giving a poor spray pattern, so the fuel is not being burned and shows as black smoke. This often happens if the diesel is used mainly for short trips and gets few 'blasts' down a motorway. Have you tried a good quality fuel additive which will clean both the pump and injectors? A new turbo will be much more costly than a bottle of fuel additve! If that fails then I suggest consulting a diesel specialist before going to the expense of a new turbo. At least they will be able to give you on-site advise.
Smoking Turbo,
Remove the turbo outlet hose to the engine and check for any oil deposits. If there is any check the turbo shaft for any movement up and down and also if it moves in and out of housing, there is a tolerance limit, but best to check anyway. Past experience is that sometimes under load and speed, oil can get past the turbo into engine,
