Forum:

the rear cross member (which connects to the rear axle) has broken clean off at the chassis.

any one ever replaced or fabricated a new one?

cheers in advance

so no joy

i have decided to give this problem a try myself by re welding the chassis sections, think its gonna be the cheapest and easiest way, if it woeks i will let you know

well it is re welded

i have re welded the structure putting in spacers and welding them on, it looks ok but now wont start (flat battery) so i will test drive tommorow

Re-manufacture

Yes; mark the chassis accurately, and place datum lines on it for accurate alignment, using 4 or 6 mm thick plate, reinforce the inner side of the chassis well past the crossmember location.

Fabricate a new crossmember from a suitable sized box section of at least 6mm wall thickness, drill a 10mm hole in it top and bottom, weld it in using arc welding, if possible.
Once it is welded in, tape the bottom hole up, pour old engine oil into the top hole until it is full, rock the vehicle to ensure the entire box section is covered in oil. Remove the tape from the bottom hole and drain the oil out.
Clean out the chassis by blasting it with a jet wash through the numerous holes in it, this will take some time to do, when it is all nicely cleaned on the inside, blast it with a proprietory rustproofing compound.

just passed an mot

no comments or problems with the cross member, not bad as i only spent £35.00 in total, including the cost of a profesional welder to do some of the mig welding
