Forum:
i brought a 1992 fourtrak 2.8 tdx se for £750 thinking it was cheap add a clutch at £100 but thats not my concern im worried i dug into the mot history and found it to have had majore defects one was excessive corrosion aorund a seatbelt mounting
my question is can you weld around any majore defects like this or would it be a case of a new chassies under the shell of the car it has now got 11 months mot but it was very well coated undernieth with wax oil so mot bloke would not have seen excesith corrosion will post photos of it soon any help would be brill

You should be able to weld
You should be able to weld up any problem with body work or chassis. Be warned though, once you start you'll likely find two new holes for every one you fix to begin with...
Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.
Holier than thou
Yes you can weld it up, there are certain conditions though, particularly as you have to conform to current legislation and welding standards for an mot.
To weld anything structural or safety related, you have to use arc welding, stick, MIG, or tig welding is allowed; this must be of a standard to conform to MOT regulations which mean it must be fully welded around the entire perimeter of the plate, and it must be welded to good solid metal.
This applies to the chassis, chassis components, mountings for safety related components such as fuel tank mountings, seat belt mountings, and body or suspension mountings.
Brazing or gas welding is not allowed on these components, but is allowed on such things as body panels, floors etc, as these are not classed as structural components as the vehicle has a seperate chassis.
so what your saying is even
so what your saying is even if its a main point it can be welded as long as its seam welded i wouldnt use a ark welder there it would be a mig wich im quite skilled with used to weld exausts for a living i had a kia jeep that had rotted on the back end on the end of the chassie and i used i think was 5 or 6mm plate on it may have been thicker that was ark welded and came out fine i was just very wary on it being around main sopport mounts for things
