Spotlights - alternator current output?

Forum:

Hi all, I want to add somewhere between 400 to 800 watts worth of lighting to the front of my 94 Sporty / Feroza, wiring is not a problem... current supply is.

Does anyone know, what is the amperage output of a stock alternator on my (or maybe the whole series) of Sportrak / Feroza?

Also, anyone else been crazy enough to add this much lighting? If so, please share your story Smile

help im blind

wow thats a large wattage of light, you might need either a double alternaor set up or double battery, standard set up wont run that much power without problems, what are you trying to look at? the moon? Smile

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Shocking

You are drawing 33.5 - 67 amps from your battery, this is in addition to the current already required by your engine and ancillary systems such as heaters, wipers, electric windows, etc. Uprating your system is the only answer, you will require a new high output alternator, uprated battery, new heavy duty cabling, and most likely, relay's.

In the past I have used marine alternators, although not cheap, they are extremely durable, and come waterproofed as standard; they come in a range of output's, currently up to about 250 amps.

To work out the total amperage required by your alternator, you will need to work out your total wattage of all your electrical systems, these will include everything fitted to your vehicle which is electrical.

Add up the total wattage of everything electrical, divide this by 12, this will give you your total amperage, get your local motor factor to recommend a suitable battery; change your alternator and its wiring.

Volts X Amps = Watts
Watts Divided by volts = amps
Watts Divided by amps = volts

Hope this is of use.

LIGHTING

Search Lights were last used in the war so I'd imagine your best bet would be to tow a generator.

Joking aside what the hell do you want that much light for, not road use as you will get a tug.

Cibie Oscars dont pull anywhere near that amount and are bright and the Alternator should cope with those as a pair. Your Battery should be H/Duty and your normal wiring via a relay will cope.

Most spots are 60w-100w and I think anything in the order of 6-800 would need a lot of mods to start coping. Bear in mind most external halogen light running on mains are up to 500w but usually below. Just don't put them on too close to another car or you'll bubble his paint job.

OLDMINIMAN

I think the out put is between 45 and 60 amps. An Ammeter will verify the exact Ampage being produced by you Alternator

Thanks guys, I appreciate

Thanks guys, I appreciate your feedback, I am though aware of the issues you've brought up. I do plan on buying an uprated heavy duty battery to match and recabling it with higher gauge copper cabling.

My original question still hasn't been answered though, what is the nominal current output of the standard sportrak alternator? Smile
