Repair Your Lights To As New

LIGHT DUTY REPAIRS

Many people with older vehicles suffer with problems with corrosion affecting lighting, and light units, most people look to replace light units with secondhand units, while this is OK on most occasions, many people suffer with similar problems in a short space of time.

Bulb holders are the worst offenders, these corrode badly, and often cause light failure, or difficult to find problems, on Fourtrak models a simple and often cheaper than secondhand parts repair is possible. Bulb holders are available cheaply, most models of Fourtrak have bulbholders which are a push fit into the plastic bodies, these are simply pulled out of the plastic body with a good pair of pliers.
Simply replace them with new bulbholders, find an appropriate size for a bulb, and push it in, push the wires through the body of the housing, and refit the rubber grommet to the back, to prevent water ingress.
Reflectors within certain lights have a metal reflector, these can simply be cut from chrome plated steel, highly polished, stainless steel, again polished, aluminium plate, polished, or the inside of the light can be sprayed with a chrome effect spray paint.

Bulb holders can be purchased individually, or in quantities of 10 or 50 from Vehicle Wiring Products, based in Ilkeston, Derbyshire. They provide free catalogues, and orders can be taken by phone, fax, or e-mail.
Perhaps other site users can specify other companies around the country who also supply individual components, this way we can have new lights at minimal costs.

Shiny

Its always a good idea to go round electrical connectors now and again with some emmory paper to shine up all joints so you have maximum contact, emmory paper works well beacause you can fold it to fit into all tiny little spaces and gaps, also check wiring because you can get a blackening of the metal that interupts the voltage flow especially on older motors.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Lube up you connector!

I find that after cleaning up the connectors (as above) its good to apply a thin coating of petroleum Jelly (Vaseline) to the connectors. This helps to stop them corroding again and also helps to achieve maximum contact.

One more thing to add is I swear by Osram Silver Star Bulbs, they give out a brilliant white light which gives you increased viewing distance even on dipped beam, High beam is like daylight! Plus due to the white light they pick up reflective materials from much further away so you see signs (and erm....... 'emergency vehicles') much earlier than normal bulbs (and shall we say usually out of radar range too!). Nuff said Wink

jelly

Sometimes put a bit of jelly around the terminal connectors on batterys too, and not the edible type!!
