steering problem with my fourtrak

Forum:

Iv got a problem with my steering, its really quite a nightmare staying straight on the motorway theirs lots of play but im not sure which part needs replacing. Theirs a lot of play on the joint at the end of the idler arm so im not sure if its the idler or the long bar that attaches to it. Can anyone help !!!

Track Rod ends probably need

Track Rod ends probably need replacing. I'm guessing this is the ideler your refuring to?

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

wadering steering

A number of things can cause the car to wander including excessive road cambers and tyres. I would check for tyre damage to inner or outer edges to ensure the tracking is correct. Grease all the joints and keep them greased beween services eg 3K miles.

There are a number of joints on the steering but they usually last well as long as they are greased regular. By holding the bars they will twist clockwise and anticlckwise on the joint. This you will find more difficult once greased.

I am not saying that this is the cause but that it is a possibilty and play in the joints will be exagerated by lack of grease.

Is the Car due for an MOT? That will show any problems. Ifyou find that one joint has excessive play then get it checked and replaced before it separates and the steering fails.

steering problems with my fourtrak

thanks for your help, just one question, im trying to find out what the long bar diagnally goig up to the ideler arm from the nearside track rod end is called and is this one piece. cheers

Wandering

Oldminiman has covered most things, additional things to check are the wheel bearings, play in these will compound problems in the steering linkages.

Check your suspension also, worn shock absorbers will cause similar problems.

Most likely is that a number of things will be contributing to your problem.

Rod names

Hi, this is the proper names for the steering, you have the pitman arm( which is the part out of the pump which goes left and right), which connects to a relay arm (which is the diaganal link arm) which goes to the tie rod(track rod) which is connected to the steering knuckles, and your thigh bone is conected to your leg bone etc etc.....:)

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!
