Help. No reverse?

Forum:

Hi, I have got a 1991 fourtrak 2.8 td. The problem I have got is I cant get reverse gear? All the other gears work fine but it wont go into reverse. I have got the gearbox that you have to push a button on the dash for 4H.
Has any one else had the same problem and what can I have to do to fix it?
Cheers Kev

Could be the main shaft nut

Could be the main shaft nut thing. Reverse is one of the gears that went when mine did it. But it's unusual for it to just be one gear, while all others are fine.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

You havent been checking the

You havent been checking the gearbox oil lately have you? Or it may have just come loose. There is, and I am really going back with my memory on this one, a pivot bolt that holds the link between the gear lever and the selector, that screws in from the outside on the top left hand side of the gearbox. It MAY be right up the top of the box, even in the alloy top cover. Have a feel around from underneath to try to find it. I have had it fall out on the road once on me, and no reverse after that. The link drops down into the bottom of the box.
The push button 4wd selection plays no part in the problem.

If it is this, the solution is, 1 pull the top cover off the gearbox in situ, and hope like heck you can fish the link out with a piece of wire, or 2 removal of the gearbox/transfer case to get it out.

Have fun

reverse

Funnily enough i have noticed over the last few months on my f70 that reverse is sometimes awkward to engage but the other gears are no probs, what i have to do is either put it in a forward gear then into reverse or put it into reverse with the clutch down but then slowly lift the clutch up so it bites and it slips in just like that as if to say whats the problem but its only sometimes.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Geared Up

The last one i did was the selector rod to selector fork connection, check you have resistance when trying to engage reverse, if not it is most likely the rod, selector fork, or the roll pin which connects them.
To gain access remove the internal trim around the gearstick, remove the circlip which holds the gearstick in and remove the gearstick. Drop the rear gearbox crossmember and block to lower the gearbox slightly; on top of the gearbox is the aluminium housing which holds the selector mechanism. Undo this and remove, it is a little fiddly, but far easier than removing the entire box and transfer case.
Refit the gearstick into the housing and you can see it all working, along with any problems.

no reverse

Hi, Thanks for all the info, I can pull the lever hard over to the right but it wont pull down into reverse, if i let the clutch up it dose not make any noise and the lever dose not move? I check all you have said and let you know. It seems strange how I can get all 5 foward gears fine with no noise from the box? Any other comments are most welcome!
Cheers Kev

Problem solved

I took the top of the box off, real pain to get it out! I found that a spring had broken on the thing that stops you going from 5th straight into reverse. It was even more of a pain putting it back together. Thank you for all the help.
