INDICATOR

You need to check that there is both Positive and Negative (Earth) supply at the bulb holder. The bulb need to be removed and a test taken between the positive terminal at the bottom of the holder and the holder chassis. If no power is found then check the positive connection to a suitable other earth. If you get a voltage connection then it is negative (earth) that has a break , probably due to corrosion. The positive terminals also corrode and usually can be cleaned with the tip of a screw driver. Equally the sides of the bulb holder can rust and cause a dead connection for the bulb. Lightly clean with fine wet/dry paper. Spray out the buld holder with WD40 and the re check for a good positive and negative supply.

It may be necessary to dismantle the unit and ensure that the wiring hasn't corroded away completely. If it had then replace with new wire and if necessary re-solder the postive to create a lower bulb conector. A blackened bulb indicates water intrsion into the unit and the seal should be checked. I use red rubber grease to assist the seal of the unit.

Light Work

Oldminiman has covered most things; however if there is power at the bulb holder, and the bulb works when connected to the battery, but not in the holder, it will be corrosion.
Corrosion forms inside the bulb holder grooves in which the bulb pins sit, these are difficult to clean and are often left, this gives an earth fault.
To test this, push a piece of wire between the side of the bulb holder, and the side of the bulb to form an earth path, if it now lights it is corrodion in the bulb holder grooves.
