Tachometer incorrect

Forum:

Hi all, my Tachometer is reading incorrectly, it's reading roughly half of what the engine is truly spinning at (I say roughly very loosely, after warming the engine up one I floored it until it hit the rev limiter which the tach hit at 4k rpm)

I have the service manual from the site and have been searching through it to no avail, how can I adjust / repair this tachometer problem?

Hi, err it would be nice to have some details about what vehicle it is, age engine etc please.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Tachy

Hmm not to sure how they work on the sportrak, never done one, possibility is the alternator playing up or the drive in the dash, not sure sorry, someone else needs to join in.But on something like that i normally go to alternator first (cos thats how most get the revs count from - engine speed) Scratch one-s head

Tacho

There are usually two kinds of Tacho, a mechanical one which is driven from the gearbox or an electrical which in most cases is electrical and "driven" from the coil impuses.

Looking at the wiring diagram for the Sporty the Tachometer is electrical and is operated using the coil impulses. Looking at the wiring diagram the Tacho is supplied with the impuses by the B12 line on the Mutiway connector behind the tacho on the rear of the unit and then to IG Coil via 7.5 amp fuse which controls all guages, warning ligts etc.

The rear is a printed circuit and B12 is the terminal nearest the drivers window. It may be worth removing the complete dial unit and ensuring that the multiway connectors are clean and secure.

No adjustment is shown on the diagram or circuit and provided all the other dials are working correctly then I would suspect a fault in the Tacho. Sometimes people have these out and move the needle effectivly reducing the swing and making the dial useless. I assume that this has just occured so that should not be the reason.

I would suggest you source a replacement from one being privately broken on ebay although I suspect you will have to purchase the speed etc as a unit. Shop around as private breakers are usually the cheaper.

I am afraid that the paper manual is just a vague as the CD manual and interpretation from japanesse to English has lost some of the logic and understanding.

Tacho.

Tachmeter is electrical and it is featured on the CD workshop manual showing wiring circuit etc.

Tacky

If the wiring is not suspect, it is the tacho itself, check the wiring, if this is ok replace the tacho and this should clear the problem.

Tacho problems are very rare on all Daihatsu 4X4's, only ever seen two myself, on both occasions it was the tacho itself.
