Forum:
hi everyone my sporty 16V J reg will start in the morning but has difficulty going past 4000revs then it will cut out if i leave the revs to low and when I come to start it, it won't start unless I leave it for half an hour or so.
At first I thought it may be the water temp sensor but it seems like it's something else.
I've tried the coil, new dizzy, leads seem ok but I did MINIMANS self diagnostic and it seems to point at the temp sensor...will this problem have that effect?
will it make a difference if i just cut the temp sensor wire?
any help is MOST appreciated - thankyou

Temp Sensor.
It does seem to be a temp. problem and I think if you just bypass or diconnect it, you may find the ECU will go into safe mode and stop the engine from starting.
Take the sensor out and clean the end of it and replace it, or replace it. Try eBay as a number of Sporties are being broken.

Fuel the not firing
Your system should drop into limp home mode, according to my diagnostic sheet, i.e. when cold it should run a little rough, and when the engine is warm it should run ok, this is because the system puts a fixed value setting into the ecu.
Cutting out at low revs, and struggling to get over 4000RPM sounds more like a fuel system problem, insufficient fuel appears to be getting to the system.
Has the vehicle been run very low on fuel, or even run out of fuel, this could introduce dirt from the tank into the system, restricting fuel flow, has contaminated fuel from a can been put into the vehicle, or is the vehicle used a lot off road, or in very dusty environments.
Check the fuel filter, if this is clean, strip the fuel lines out and blow them out with compressed air, break them at the rubber joints, blow them right back to the fuel tank.
With clean lines and a clean filter, check the fuel pump, ensure this is working correctly, check the fuel pressure to ensure sufficient pressure for the injectors to work.
Finally, if you find dirt in the system, drain the fuel tank and clean thoroughly.
Just an after thought, take a sample of the fuel, place in a clean clear glass bottle or jar, stand for a couple of hours and see if it seperates, if it does you have water contaminated fuel.
As an after thought, remove
As an after thought, remove the fuel filler cap, start the engine and see if it runs ok, if so, it is the fuel tank breather blocked.
As an after after thought
Had a similar problem once with a discovery ARGHHHHH once all the experts were baffled, they turned to me, once everything above had been done, i turned my attention to the fuel tank.
In the tank is the fuel pick up pipe, this usually has a small strainer fitted, this was broken, once a vacuum was applied part of it was sucked over the end of the pipe; thus restricting fuel flow.
Another similar problem on another vehicle was where the pick up pipe was perforated near the top, once the tank was below 3/4 full it picked up a combination of fuel and air.

Fuel Filter???
ROCKY, DOG, GUN. NEED I SAY MORE.
Had a similar prob with fourtrak diesel. Fuel filter sucking in air caused stalling at low revs, no power after 2000 revs or when turbo kicked in.
Check fuel pipes for cracks/tightness,
Check filter housing is tight seals are ok and housing isnt cracked.
