Air filter, correct fitting

Forum:

Hi Everyone,

A few months ago I fitted an air filter to my '99 Fourtrak and have since wondered if the fan blades are designed to force the air into a vortex or whether the blades rotate the air filter. At the moment I have it firmly screwed tight and strongly suspect the air around the filter moves rather than the filter spinning. Can anyone confirm this?

Many thanks

Mark

You are correct. The filter

You are correct. The filter should be done up tight. The plastic shield and blades are designed to spin the air, forcing major debris particles through the hole at the top of the plate inside the air cleaner lid.

A tip here. A cheaper option I have found in Oz anyhow, is to buy the filter for the Toyota Hilux. The plastic shield comes off the Daihatsu filter, and clips onto the Toyota one. Only mod needed is the rubber seal off the base of the Daihatsu filter needs to be removed, and glued into the air cleaner canister, around the outlet to the engine intake. Over here, the Toyota elements are about half the price of the Daihatsu ones.

In a spin

These type of filters are known as swirl filters, they spin the air into a vortex, throwing larger or heavier debris into the collecting can, thus reducing the load on the filter.
Air filters are blown out with compressed air, from the inside out, every 3,000 miles, and replaced every 24,000 miles.
If the vehicle is used in dusty environments, half the cleaning and replacement times.

That is the case with

That is the case with several engine parts over here in the UK too. It's always worth trying to find an aulternative Toyota part. They are offten cheaper.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

Big thanks

Hi Nev K, Assasin and Bundyrumandcoke

Thanks you guys, this will help me keep my Fourtrak tip top and just wanted to make sure it was operating as it should. Hopefully this strand will also help others if they need to look it up to and definate good tips on using Toyota parts. Thanks again everyone.
