f300 sportrak front diff

Forum:

Are there any common faults that are fixable on a sportrak front differential?

I'm not getting any 4 wheel drive, (tested staticly on axle stands)

when I jack the car up and twist the drive shaft the automatic freewheeling hubs engage within half a turn. but then when I turn either wheel, with the hub in the locked state in 4hi or 4low, it just spins the drive shaft, with no movement to the prop shaft

I checked the prop shaft and its solid in 4h/l and free in 2hi, It spins as you would expect when the engine was running and the truck was up on stands (I would have expected some noises from the diff if it was broke, but it was quiet).

Is it worth draining the diff to see if there is any metal shards in the oil... but then what should I do? have I missed something obvious?

Diff testing

If you had both front wheels off the ground then you won’t see the propshaft moving, only the other wheel spinning in the opposite direction – this is quite normal. Try the test again but with just one wheel jacked up, make sure both locking hubs are engaged, select 4H or 4L in the transfer box and neutral in the gear box. Spin the wheel which you jacked up and if the diff and hubs are OK then you should see the propshaft turning as well.

cheers for the advice. I did

cheers for the advice.

I did the jack 1 wheel test on all three sportraks (the wifes automatic jap f300 rocky, My sportrak, and the scrap sportrak I keep for parts) on the rocky and the SCRAPtrak it worked, on mine I couldn't engage the passenger freewheeling hub, I'm sure I engaged it earlyer but I must be mistaken.

anyhow took the F/W/hub off and swaped it for a spare from the SCRAPtrak as I lined the hub up I noticed a broken lug on the brake spring of the passenger hub (see FS-60 in service manual) so went back to the SCAPtrak locked/engaged the F/W/hub removed it in the locked state put it on the sportrak, jacked the wheel and my faith in the diff is restored.

so it looks like I'll be transplanting the brake spring tomorrow.
