MIS-MATCHED TYRES

Forum:

Hi All

Another simple query...

I have just had a lecture from the guy at "national tyres" about my sportrak.

I have a pair of KUMHO ADVENTURER AT's 215/75/r15 tyre's (daihatsu rims)on the front and normal road 1tyres 95/80/15(vitara rims) on the rear. He recons I'll get transmission wind up due to the mis-match of sizes, I admit when I put a tape measure across them there's half an inch difference between the front's to back's, but will it do as he say's as it is only in 2-HI? I could understand if I put it into 4-hi/low, but I obviously wouldn't unless I put the mathching wheels back on the rear and was on the right terain.

The idea was to save the rear tyres for off roading and not wear them out on the road before I had a chance.

How about this one

I put my Fourtrak in for it's MOT. I was told the front wheel bearings were slack and as a result she would fail the test,Okay I says, fix them. Gets a MOT certificate, couple of days later I looked at the hubs, bolt holes still full of crud,no spanner/tool marks, they had never been off, so I jacked her up and found what I thought WAS excessive play in the bearings, so back to the test centre I went and had a word, a nice one. Explanation from the tester was 'the excessive play in the bearings was necessary to prevent transmission wind up on tarmac' Bulls**t

For Ch***t sake, she's 2x4/part time 4wheel drive. Maybe this tester was the one who failed a series2 Land Rover for NOT having a hand brake cable,to the rear brakes. For those who do'nt know the handbrake on a Land Rover operates on a drum at the rear of the gearbox

Garages dont trust em

Hi over a couple of years i have managed to aquire three sets of rims and tyres foe me fourtrack at dirt cheap prices using second hand/ ebay breakers etc, its worth looking about. It is not good practice to miss match tyre sizes but i can understand why your doing it, the summer roads take their toll on 4x4 tyres, especially on the front inners cos of the camber on the axle, to be honest you want to put your better tyres on the back to save them. As long as you have free wheeling hubs on the front it wont make a blind bit of difference to the gearing as the tyre just runs on a bearing, its when you hit 4x4 that trouble can begin like you say. Garages have car mechanics in alot of them and that is what they are - a CAR mechanic not a 4x4 expert, ive been to garages before and asked them what to do in the front axles with things and you get 'dunno mate' never done em before' or dunno whats in there', you do have to look around to find someone who knows there stuff about your vehicle, hope this helps.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

cheers guys

I do not and never will trust a garage, I hate the fact that the only interest they have in your motor is profit.

I appreciate the advice you guys gave, Im also glad my logic (it doesn't matter in 2wd as long as the axles are matched) was right, he had me wondering for a while.
I have now put my better wheels on the rear to save wear and tear (never thought about the stress of camber/steering) and all is going well.

I realy need to go somewhere to wear out my good wheels B4 they perish (tesco carpark isn't realy off road !!)
