Suspenssion lift... yet again another question! lol

Forum:

Ive read most of the topics on this but probably not understood or missed bits out!

94 sporty (fyi, my dampers are still in perfect working order before i get told to bin them!)

1. i can get my 2" lift winding the torsion bars up on the front, correct?

2. i think ive missed or not understood correctly, the rear lift will need a set of shackles? springs? or springs + shocks?

The front i can manage with my knowlage but my terminology is not quite up to spec for the rear, a laymans explanation would be great!
what do i need, which is best and which is best value for money?

regards

Raising suspension

The front is easy, as you said, wind the torsion bars up 2".

To lift the rear, you need longer shackles. The shackles connect the back of the leaf spring to the chassis.

You can see them at the back of the springs, basically 2 pieces of bar/flat steel.

The general rule of thumb is whatever lift you want, double the length of the shackles. ie. 2" lift = 4" longer shackles.

Springs - Over time the leaf springs will flatten out, so a new set would give some extra lift, depending on how worn the springs fitted are.

Shocks - When you raise the suspension, you pull the piston further out of the shock absorber, so you can buy shocks which have been extended, from 1"-9".

The other option is a body lift, which means unbolting the body from the chassis and fitting bigger spacers between the chassis and body.

Just remember that when you raise the suspension, you raise the center of gravity, the engine/gearbox etc is raised as well as the body. This will make it more unstable when cornering.
