Hello,
I hope somebody can help. I'm working on a 1988 Fourtrak for an old friend of the family and it's failed the MOT on a wheel bearing.
When you jack the car up and wobble the wheel, like you would for checking the wheel bearing. There is play. But on stripping down there is no play in the wheel bearing but there is play in what I can only really describe as the ball and socket assembly behind the disc brake area.
If any body has come across this and knows what it might be please can you let me know.
If it's parts that need replacing what sort of money could I be looking at.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Darren

Was the play evident when
Was the play evident when grabbing the wheel top and bottom, and moving up and down, or when grabbing the wheel front and back.
If its the first, then it will be the king pin bearings. On top and bottom of the swivel housing, there are rectangular plates, held in with 4 bolts (a fifth one in the centre of the top one helps hold the brake hose in position) If you remove the bolts and prise the plate up (do the top one first) you should find a couple of shim plates. There are also shims under the bottom plate. Remove shims till the movement disappears. Unfortunately, its trial and error as to how many to remove. If there is still movement after all the shims are removed, then the king pin bearings need replacement, which means removing the entire knuckle housing.
If its movement when the wheel is grabbed at front and back, then it could be a steering componant issue.

Swivels
Yep the other guy is correct, it will be your swivels playing up, probably best to put in new bearings top and bottom from milner off road, dont forget to put shims back in otherwise you will over tighten the joint, while youve got it off may aswell replace the big round rubber seals on the other side of the swivel joint if they need doing (grease will flow out if worn).Put plenty of lithium grease around the cv joints while its out keep em lubricated to prolong life span. Its an easy job and you dont have to take as much apart as what you might think.Look up www.milneroffroad.com they have a price list and are the cheapest and best company around!!!
Full of ideas but no time to do them!!
