auto to manual and still no 4x4

Forum:

Just changed my auto hubs to manuals and still no four wheel drive:'( Cray 2  How would i be able to tell where the problem is

Hubs

Hi.
did you remember to turn the tabs on the hub caps to 'lock or 4x4' to engage the splines in the the hub unit, which will then drive the front wheels.

Place truck on four axle stands ,engine off, engage both gear boxs, turn tabs on hubs to lock/4x4 , try to rotate front wheels, they should then engage internal spines and lock up and not rotate, assuming front prop /transfer box has engaged. Or jack up front of truck,in 2hi, engage the front hubs with the tab (lock/4x4), then turn the front prop by hand if the diff and front halfshafts are okay you then should be rotating at least one front wheel, the one with the least friction. (brake drag, ect). All this assuming your transfer box is driving the front prop shaft.

If all fails ,drain the front diff, check the magnetic drain plug for bits of metal, and the oil, and decide whether to remove the diff cover plate and check out the internals to see what is or not rotating, could be a bust diff or a broken half shaft .

Come on guys, help this guy out, or correct me on this posting.

no drive to front prop

Just had the jeep up on four axle stands and no drive to the front prop so does this mean that my transfer box is ****ed Cray 2 Cray 2  .. If so can i spilt the transfer box off the gear box or would it be easyer to replace both,i have done a gear box swap before on my last fourtrak and it was a bit pain but i got there in the end

You can split the transfur

You can split the transfur from the gearbox. 4 long bolts kinda sandwich the 5th gear (over drive) section between the transfur and the gear box. It may not be that terminal though.
If you have a 4wd switch on the dash to put it in 4x4 you could just have a wiring failure going to the solinoid that operates the transfure for instance. There seem to be a lot of problems with the electronic part of these these switch operated transfures.

I do have a 4 high button on

I do have a 4 high button on the dash but i tryed it in 4 low and still no power to the front prop.I do have
a couple of snapped wires from the solinoids but that is why i fitted manual hubs to bypass that

Front hubs

Hi
There are NO connections, electrical or otherwise, to auto or manual hubs, they are a purely mechanical operation, engaging via a sliding spine collar/shaft using the rotation of wheel hub/axle to engage one to the other. Via the auto mechanism or the tab on the manual hub, (lock/free or 4x4/4x2).

On my '91 Fourtrak' with 'AVM' manual hubs, to engage 4Low the operation is to check the tab on the hubs are turned to '4x4', engage '4Low' with the transfer box gear stick then put truck into gear with main stick and drive off. When 4Low is no longer required I just move transfer lever to '2High, unlocking (4x2)the the hubs when I remember.
A purely mechanical selection,no electronics or vacuum solenoids, its either in gear or out.

To use '4High' in my case which is rarely. I would place the hub tabs in '4x4' if not already engaged, press the dash switch,to engage '4High', (a little clunk is heard on pressing this switch as components are engaged) leaving the transfer gear stick in '2High', and put the truck into gear with the main gear stick and move off.

Engagement of 4wd is indicated with a little '4wd' symbol illuminated on the dash display

This dash switch , with its associated electro / mechanical / vacuum operation is prone to failure, I am really not sure how it works, ( you cannot beat a gear stick for positive selection, some Fourtraks were fitted with a transfer box, gear stick selector for all 4wd selection).
I believe there are some posts on this site with info on this switch.

So i,am i right i thinking

So i,am i right i thinking that if i have no drive to the front prop it,s a transfer box problem ...

The solonoid is for the

The solonoid is for the transfur end. And I belive it is needed no mater the range your in. Not 100% on that though.
