Yet another problem! Clutch... what is the damage

Forum:

Yet again I have run in to another problem, I need a new clutch, I can’t change gear!
Basically I was travelling through a very flooded road (bow wave was up to the bonnet) the car coped fine and got through. About 500 yards down the road I was going along at about 50mph in fifth gear, suddenly revs shot up to 7000rpm put my foot down on the clutch there was a klonk and I just coudnt change gear. The car starts fine but lots of water was draining of the car which one would expect after going through deep water! One other think, I was still in 4L when the clutch went. Is it a case of a new clutch or have I buggerd it more than that? If it is a clutch am I looking at loads of money (I have very little at the moment). Is labour the main cost? Could I get the part for a garage and reduce cost? Any one no where to get a cheap clutch! Sorry for all the rambling this is another moment of desperation. I desperately need a car for Monday- this is not looking good!

clutch

if you were doing about 50mph in low ratio you have probably knackard the gear book you aren't really supposed to go over 30-35 mph in that ratio, you might have knackard your hubs to if you were driving on the road.

see what other people think but its gonna cost you.

Crap!

Yer i forgot i was in that ratio untill i looked down after i found i couldnt change gear!. What are the signs of a nakerd gear box apart from the fact of not been able to change gear! any one got a cheap second hand one for sale! And yes i was on the road. Sad

new gearbox

Try Ebay for someone breaking a simiilar Daihatsu it'll be cheaper if it is private than a breakers. Labour will be the biggest part of any work i'm afraid but you may be able to find a local mechanic who could do it cheaper.

£150 for a gear box?

I have found a gear box for £150 from Thornton Breakers, i am still wating to find out the milage and exact year of the part. Is this price ok? should i be looking for cheaper as i still have a very hefty labour cost coming my way! Also is this definalty the problem? i dont want to by a part i dont need! Is the any chance of a repair of a gear box? Cheers, Chris.

Gearbox

I was looking around for a gearbox on Ebay, and they were all around £80-100, but it would have meant traveling to collect it.

In the end I had the whole gearbox reconditioned. Replaced all the selector rails, forks, all the bearings, springs, pins etc, all the shafts checked, and also a new reverse idler gear.

To have the gearbox removed, the work done, new clutch and cable fitted, and the whole lot refitted cost £400, which I didn't think was bad.

Realy? doesnt sound to bad.

Realy? doesnt sound to bad. How did you nacker your gear box in the first place? someone one ebay just quoted me £250 just for the gear box!

Gearbox

Someone in the past had welded up the selector rods, welded up the refill plug, and refitted the gearbox with nearly no oil.

It must have done at least 25,000 like it.

As you can imagine, the gearbox wasn't in a very good state.

What sort of state can a

What sort of state can a gear box be in to be recondtioned? (Yours does sound like it was pretty awfaul) it sounds like it might be a cheaper option. I still need to make sure this is definalty the problem so i can get a part or like your did get it recondtioned. Some one quoted me £551- you must be bloody joking. £146 is the cheapest so far.

Trying to sort it out!

I have found a garage to look at the sportrak, they said they will be charging £45 an hour. Should they give me a free quote for the work? I have had a chat and they also think it is the gearbox. My Next question is about the nackering of the hubs? what could of happen? why? and again what it the damage? Thanks. Chris
