Sportrak Reverse Problem

Forum:

Suddenly, the reverse gear has packed up on my sportrak.

At first it wouldn't even try to engage, now with a lot of pulling on the gear lever, it goes into reverse.

Sometimes it will jump out of gear, and other times it seems to stick in reverse, and it needs a good yank to free it.

I was thinking it may be the selector rail/fork?

Has anybody got any ideas?

Its a right pain, as I have to use it to get to work every day, and its amazing how often you need reverse.

Thanks in advance for your ideas.

reverse gear

Hi,
Looks like you could be in for a another gear box do you live in wiltshire why I ask this is because my local breakers yard in Hampshire had a sporty about a month ago might be worth a phone call Andover breakers at Lugershall try that.
Alfie.

Went straight in

Just took it out this morning, went to put it in reverse, and it went straight in, no problem.

Tried again, and it wouldn't go right into gear, but just started to engage, started to reverse back, there was a big clunk, and it went fully into gear.

I'm going to change the oil today, and see if it helps, but I'm now thinking possibly the clutch may not be allowing it to fully engage, or possibly a damaged selector rod/fork.

Hopefully I will be able to get it repaired or replaced.

gearbox

when my 4trak did the same thing it was just before the clutch cable gave way

Gearbox problem

Well I got back from holiday today, and rang the mechanic who has got my car.

So it seems, it had nearly no oil in the gearbox, and somebody in the past had tried welding something inside of the gearbox, and in the process, had also welded the refill plug to the gearbox.

A local garage was supposed to have changed all the oils only a few months ago.

I think I had better check the oil in the diffs and transfer box now.

The gearbox had to be sent away to be refurbished, plus it needed a new clutch.

Going to collect it tonight, and find out how much its all cost me.

Problem sorted

The gearbox is now good as new.

It seems in the past the selector forks had broken, and somebody welded them back up.

The weld had started to break, hence the problem getting reverse gear.

Also as they had welded the refill plug, when they put the gearbox back on, it had nearly no oil in it.

There was only just enough to stop the gears from seizing.

Its unbelievable how rough some people can be.

Anyway, the gearbox has been totally rebuilt, new bearings, all the gears checked plus 1 new gear, new forks, rails, springs.

The clutch was nearly worn out, so while the gearbox was off, I had the clutch changed as well.

Hopefully theres nothing much left to go wrong!
