sportrak engine re-build help

Forum:

hi all ,I am in need of some advice from any of you that has had to re-build these engines before .my sporty timing belt snapped ,i have got the head off it ,and it does not appear to have bent any valves as they all seem to be in place ,where they should be ,can anybody tell me if their should be any obvious signs of damage ,which there does not ,to my relief. But What i intend to do ,is to re-build the engine from the bottom up ,starting with changing the big ends etc.Strip the head down ,change stem seals etc .

I am feel fairly competent about doing the job ,but feel any pointers to watch out for would be an advantage ,so if anybody has any ,they would be much appreciated.

I also am in need of a supplier of the shells ,engine parts ,at a reasonable price ,i thank you all for taking the time to read this and hope some kind person will help me with my plight.

many thanks vince

sounds like an ambitious

sounds like an ambitious project mate, one i wouldnt mind having a crack at but im really not sure where to start. ive seen companies such as miler and other selling parts, but never engine overhaul parts like the shells you mentioned.

if i were you i would just overhaul the head, leave the block as it is. if you replace the headgasket and sort out the timing thats a few big jobs done, then just dismantle the head and clean/rebuild.

if i were you, if you have the cash fit a sports cam while its stripped. along with a decent airfilter and a good exhaust you would be on for a significant power increase. i know if would be good for you and the car if you rebuild the bottom end but usually they are bullet proof, they have the most snags from the headgasket up.

i would, however replace the sump gasket and give the sump a good clean out from underneath (unless you have the engine out already) just to get rid of the excess gunk in there.

a tutorial of somekind would be good if you can manage it, i would love to strip my head down but i dont think i have the confidence - just yet!

sportrak engine re-build

Hi Paul thanks for your prompt reply ,I bought the sportrak as a non runner ,the camshaft had sheared due to an oil way being blocked.so the head had damage and was no good.I managed to get another head and have recently fitted it all and was working superb, however a couple of weeks ago a strange rattle developed when the engine was warm,i had a garage locate the source of noise ,and they said it sounded like the big ends were knocking ,to be honest i was not convinced of this.anyways i was driving the sporty ,came to a round about the engine just died,i had a hunch it might be the timing belt which had gone .It was confirmed when i had it to bits the day.

So a big job it might be ,i cant afford to get the head sorted and find out the big ends need doin also . i will get the sump off and check it all out ,so do you think i might have to go to daihatsu for the engine bits then .

cheers vince

dont go to diahtasu

Hello, i would source a new engine, i got a 1.6 engine out of a daihtasu applause, they are exactly the same except for slightly more power and and no breather on the rocker cover! i purchased a bare engine with 36k on it for £325 and i got a 6 month warranty on the engine aswell. and depending on how long the engine has been out of the parent car i would remove the head and replace the gasket, mine had been standing for 3 years so after a few thousand miles the head decided to blow, which is gutting as it had been running sweet as for 3.5k, but then again that might have had something to do with me rolling it down a hill!and for a cheaper head gasket set type in Sportrack with a c into ebay and there is hundreds on there for £35 instead of £70, hope that helps ozman

Does anyone know interesting to go offroading in suffolk? the flat lands seem very crapy so far!

once you get the sump off

once you get the sump off youll be able to see if your big ends etc are knocking, probs ust a shell thats worn away and needs replacing. you might as well just replace them all from underneath, it may only cost a few pounds but if you get the engine sorted through that theres no need to buy a whole new engine and replace the thing again..

removing sump pan

1 question how do you take the sump pan off without removing the engine? as the front diff is in the way? and also if you take the engine out you wil be able to replace the clutch, which is worth doing as you can get a whole new 3 peice clutch for £80, unless its been replaced recently or you dont plan on using it offroad.
You will find a new engine easier unless you are sure you have no damage to the head, which u wont be able to tell just by looking at it!(i no from previous experience always get an ali head skimmed when it removed from an engine as they immediately bow when they are taken off!) so it will cost you best part of £80 to get it skimmed and valves reground, you also say that you think the big end's gone so thats even more expensive, so with time and cost you will be better off buying a new engine, there out there for £250 incl vat and delivery, i paid £325 for mine as it only had £30k and 6mnths warranty!

thats a good point, the

thats a good point, the money does add up. what i did is went on car forums which are prome o headgasket failure, like rover 216 or clios.

these people get gaskets fixed and heads skimmed all the time, i got mine skimmed and the valves ground down for £50, and he picked it up and delivered it.

as far as i know (without looking) there is way to remove the bolts and slide the sump off in a certain direction. this was dealt with before when a guy on here was looking to replace his sump gasket.

Engine rebuild

Again I would agree with Paul but the parts should be available from a decent Factor. It may be worth considering replacing the entire lump from one being broken on Ebay through rust. They come up quite frequently but replace the Cambelt before you put the new lump in.

Are Sports cams available for these and from where? The air filter is a good idea as the Daihatsu ironmongery takes up too much room and a "slight" increase can be gained from a more direct filter system eg K&N. Don't expect wonders though. Again with the exhaust are there Sports versions out ther? I replaced mine with a full Stainless System from Rimmers some 10 years ago and it is still good with 90k miles added. A better option is to remove the cat but you have to ensure that your emmissions remain low and there are mixed feelings on the MOT regulations. The official line from the appropriate Government web site is that it can go as long as the emmissions pass the MOT test however like most government papers it is ambigous (sorry spelling) and open to interpretation both ways.

Hope this helps

Good Luck

all the info is on WARFS under power modification to save me copying it all out. here is a cam:

only available from australia and availabel through a compay called MRT performance. i presume the prices will be high performance too and i havent seen a report on the parts' benefits.

re-engine re-build

Hi all ,many apologies for not replying sooner ,not had time to get on pc ,due to work commitments ,right then ,many thanks for all of your input on this matter ,i will now read through all of your comments and work out which way to proceed forward.i feel that if i buy another engine i could be back to square 1 ,where if i just re-build ,i can have a near as new engine as you could have taking into account the age and all of the engine ,i have already purchase the head gasket set and belts needed ,i now just need the bearing shells ,but still need a supplier for them,if any body knows where to get them from that would be magic ,i bought the other stuff from milners ,which seem to be very reasonable for the prices.I look forward to any ideas ,many thanks all.

vince

the bearing shells to be

the bearing shells to be honest should be available from the main dealer. at least you know theyll be right and theyll fit.

they shouldnt cost much either way. id google bearing shells and see if you can get a company who makes or distributes them as a business, then see if they stock for this engine.

i would presume either daihatsu or milners may be able to point you in the right direction if you give em a ring.
