Sportrak noise during acceleration

Forum:

1997 Sportrak Xi-SE 64000miles

Hi all, My Sportrak makes a rorty noise when accelerating, above 2000 rpm. The noise goes away around 3000rpm, indicating it could be something resonating. It is definitely coming from under the bonnet/ gearbox area.

It sounds like the exhaust has a small hole in it but Ive ruled that out as the problem only presents itself when the engine is under load, between 2000 and 3000rpm. The engine runs very smoothly otherwise.

The noise has not got better or worse in over 2000 miles of driving. There is nothing else going wrong with the vehicle.

Any ideas? Is this a common problem on the Sportrak?

Thanks for any help

Peter

Strap.

Check the exhaust steel strap sited in front of the catalyst. It might appear secure but they rot away at the exhaust pipe. The front pipe out lives the tail pipe, whilst the security of the front pipe gets overlooked. Unbolt the strap and see if it remains attached to its exhaust pipe.
Also check the outer casing of the catalyst ... unless its cat-less!

SPORRAK NOISE ON ACELERATION

Hi
I have two Sportraks and both have the same problem which goes away at between 2 and 3 thousand revs. It seems to be coming from inside the CAT itself and I have had the problem for years on the 1991 and lived with it. I removed the lover protectio plate from the catbut that mdeno diffference. When I got the 1996 and found the same noise I was a bit dissappointed but again haveput up with it. It has no effect on the cat performance and therefore sails through the MOT. I have sourced a 2nd hand CAT from Ebay but haven't fitted it yet, winter and all that. With the 2nd car being newer and having the same noise I am reluctant to bother as the replacement may be the same.
