Forum:
Hi all,
Has anyone done a rear disk brake conversion on a Sportrak

If so what disk / caliper / adapter plate did you use
Used my Sporty off road in water and mud and soon found that the rear brakes got full of carp.
Have to remove the rear brake drums after each trip and wash out the mud/sand paste - not nice.
So I figure that rear disks would keep cleaner or at least easier to clean afterwards.

Rear disc conversion
Done it on my F50. Used Suzuki sj410 front discs adapted slightly, & Rover 820 rear calipers. Had to make my own bolt on mounting brackets, quite a time consuming job to get every thing lined up. Made cardboard templates 1st.
Not beyond the home mechanic but there's some accurate drilling & cutting needed to make sure it all lines up correcly & safetly. Need to cut up the old backplates also.
Like I say took a while but well worth the effort, stopped really well + pads are a lot cheaper than shoes & wheel cylinders! Easy to clean out, stick the hose in behind the wheel, no problem!
Seem to remember writing it all down for someone somewhere, with pictures of the brackets etc, will try & dig them out if you're really interested.
May be easier if I had your email address.

Disc conversion
It was me that Steve wrote it all down for !!!
I also did the conversion to my F20 following Steve's instructions and it went back on the road in October after a lengthy rebuild. Like Steve said, straightforward enough but you do need to be precise. I don't know how the sportrack axle differs from the fourtrack one, but if the hubs bolt up in the same way i.e. sandwich the backplate between the axle tube end and the bearing carrier, then I'm sure you could do it in a similar fashion.
I have copies of Steve's drawings and photos if you need them, and plenty of my own too.
Keep the forum posted if you need further info.
