hi guys.
i've got a 4 trak 1990. The cam belt went last week so i striped the head down. There are a couple of areas of concern.
The first is there are cracks between the valve seat inserts on every cylinder + cracks on the inserts that sit underneath the glow plug chambers.These cracks dont appear to continue through the casting so i think i'll take a chance with these. The other thing is there appears to be cracks on the top of the piston crowns, again these look as though they have been there for some time, it just seams strange.The cam belt snapped at tick over so there was no load on the engine. Three push rods were bent which i've straightened.All the rockers are ok. So i'am just going to put it all back together and cross my fingers. I just wondered if this cracking is common or is it there has been some major trauma in the history of this veicle. Any input would be appreciated.Does anyone know how much a set of pistons will set me back with rings?

Yikes mate, those cracks don't sound good. Has it had a history of running hot?

well as rolling stone said this dose not sound good it sounds like its been boiled at some time you can always get the head presure tested this is more a problem than the pistons but if you have no luck i have about six compleat engines all good low milers and i have two brand new heads never used waxed up in plywood boxes. sory about speling but im a retard good luck anyway

but bradford grinders are good i use them a lot

thanks for the comments guys.I wouldnt mind a price for a new head, for future reference. Ill email the suppliers you recommended to get price on a set of pistons and rings. Ive had 4trk for 2 years engine always seemed ok,Brother in law had it before me for ten years, he said he never had any overheating problems. Mind you his wife drove it mostly.I should have it back together this weekend if i can get a headgasket kit for saturday.

thanks jako ill bear it in mind. Ive bought a gasket kit and should be assembling with, fingers crossed, on saturday. i'll post next week and let you know if everythings ok or turned to shite
