Clutch lifespan

Forum:

We have an F70 2.8 non-turbo diesel Rocky.

Anyone have any ideas as to the mileage one can expect from the clutch on these vehicles - it has done some towing in the past.

CLUTCH LIFE

How long is a piece of string?

It all depends on how the car is driven and driving habits and would be just as difficult to answer as the question above.

If it isn't slipping then leave it alone. To test for slip drive along at a slow speed in 2nd, keep the right foot on the gas pedal then dip the clutch and release it. The revs should rise and then drop back quite quickly when the clutch is re-engaged. If it drags then it is slipping. Don't do this at high speed. Having said that unless the slip is obvious eg on hills than again I would leave well alone.

on the subject of clutches...

My 92 fourtrak has a tendency to make a horrible grinding noise when crawling along in first or second gear. Also, it sometimes is a bit of a bugger to get into first gear. Is this clutch or gearbox related, and should i be worried?
This doesn't affect driving or towing, so at the moment i'm being a total girlie and turning the stereo up and pretending the noises are somebody elses car....
