Forum:
After reading all the posts, i still havn't decided what tyres to get fitted. I was thinking about fitting 225/75 R15 MT's at the 225/70 R15 AT's at the rear can anybody for see any problems with this or has anybody done this
many thanks for advise

Tyred
Yes, you will get transmission wind up as the rolling radius of the two axles will be different, basically the tyres are of a different circumference. Axles will rotate at different speeds while they are solidly locked together in the transmissions transfer case.
Transmission wind up is where the axles rotate at different speeds, this being the case the wheels on one axle have to constantly slip, or the transmission goes bang, it is usually the latter, which is also the most expensive. Permanent four wheel drive vehicles have a viscous coupling, this device allows slip between axles rotating at differing speeds to prevent this phenominen.
Tyres with the same circumference are 215X15, 235X75X15, or 255X70X15, using these tyres in any combination will prevent expensive transmission repairs.
Agree with the diffrent tyre
Agree with the diffrent tyre sizes being a BIG no no. As for the AT on the front, MT on the back thing. I have used this lay out on several cars for all round use, when I haven't wanted (or been able to afford) diffrent sets for diffrent things. I have found it to be a good compramise for towing (on and off road), green laning and (not too heavy duty) off roading with the same car. The AT's on the front allow better road handeling, as they grip better on tarmac that the MT (just remember that were the front goes the rear may not want to follow). The MT's on the back will push you through some snotty stuff which AT's all round wouldn't be able to coupe with (but here the problem is that the rear axle is pushing, but the front axle isn't getting much traction for stearing perpouses).
Basicly, it is a compramise. It has served me well for general work and play. Of course for heavy duty off road fun I have a totally diffrant car, so I don't need all out agresive off road tyres on my 'Jack of all trades' car.
Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

Tyre choice
I was looking at getting the GENERAL GRABBER AT2 225/70/R15 as this looks like an agressive AT tyre as i use the car onroad aswell also it is the standard tyre size for the car. If i change my mind and get MT's the smallest i could find was 225/75/R15 can anybody tell me how much this would change my speedo. I Drive a 96 sportrak. if i can get some 225/70/R15 MT's any ideas where i can get some from?
thanks very much for the advise cleared up a lot of things

to be honest even leaving
to be honest even leaving aside the differing sizes i can see you having problems, basically the tyres will be jack of all trades master of none and i can see the at`s letting you down in mud, go with one or the other and adapt your routes to suit
Tyres
Agree, stick to one or other and the circumferences should be the same to avoid problems.
