F50 Vibrations

Forum:

Hi I have a 1982 F50 and am experincing vibrations through the steering wheel starting at 45 kph stoping at 60 kph. It hapens under power and trailing throttle if you back of slightly the vibration stops. The steering ball joints, uper and lower hub bearings, wheel bearings, prop shaft unis are all ok and all wheels are ballanced. If anybody has experienced the same problems any thoughts would be appreciated.

Re: vibes

Check also the leaf spring eye bushes, particularly the rear of the front spring where the standard rubber bushes deteriorate and allow the whole axle to move about, check the U-bolts are good and tight, check that there are no broken leaves in the springs and finally check that the welded spring perch (one side only - the other side is cast into the differential housing) has not corroded and collapsed. Other than the steering box and bushes in the steering column I think that's about it. One last thought - does it have a steering damper fitted and have you checked that? Also the upper and lower swivel bearings wear grooves in the faces of the bearings usually in the straight ahead position. You can adjust this play out by removing shims but it doesn't alter the wear in the bearings which may affect the steering in the way you have described.

Hope this helps some - Alastair.

F50 Vibrations

Hi

All the suspension bushes, U bolts, steering damper, engine and trans mounts, uper and lower swivel bearings, wheel bearings, steering tie rod ends, tyres and rims are new also there is no play in the diff pinion bearings. The only thing i have found is a small amount of wear in the rear prop shaft slip joint splines. In reality it should not vibrate. The proplem is not wheel shimy ie (side to side) the steering wheel vibrates up and down only between 45/60 kph only under power and trailing throttle, 40 kph no vibration 60 kph and above no vibration and if you back the throttle off slightly the vibration stops.

Thanks

okay

I would still swap round the wheels as a process of elimination though, starting from the furthest objects away from the problem as it where, then you can work along bit by bit.A thought occurs, when at rest can you move the steering column/wheel up and down with obvious movement in bearings/bushes in column area, a further thught occurs, when you are around this magic kph speed what gear are you in? do you change alter revs etc to see if you have a faulty gear in the transmission. On your swivel joints on the front hubs have you done the pressure pull test to make sure you have it set correct so there is the right amount of force on the swivel bearings? lots and lots of things to look for. Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

As to the play in the prop.

As to the play in the prop. A little could be enough. Is it a 4 speed box? If so the front and rear props are the same length, just swop the front prop to the rear. Elimination, if nothing else. Must say if the wheel is vibrating up and down, I'd be more enclined to think it's a sympathetic vibration in the body of the car, than enything to do with the running gear. But that's more educated guess than anything.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

90%

Hi there, i am 90 % sure all you have is a bulge in a tyre, the reason i say this is that i have had very very similar feelings in my f70 when ive used tyres with bulges (use secondhand freebies in the summer on dry roads so as not to wear decent rubber)in them.Easy way to find out is to put the rears on the front and the fronts on the rear and then try it, i would have said prop shaft but cos you say the joints are ok then it probably isnt as i always go straight to the prop first cos its amazing how much commotion they make. Swap your wheels first, go and try it then get back to us to see how you got on then we can go from there if its a further problem, ok. Smile

Shake Rattle and Roll

Suggest checking the wheels for distortion, slight distortion will cause this, lift the vehicle, and set up a piece of wire in close proximity to the rim, rotate the wheels and see how much distortion is present, also check the balance weights on the wheels too see if one has been knocked off.

Suggest checking the steering column bushes, and the column is actually tight on its mounting bolts, sounds like the bushes need replacing.

Check the propshafts for any unusual problems such as balance weights knocked off, or they are slightly bent due to exhuberent off roading.

Lift the vehicle clear of the ground and sit on sturdy axle stands, start the engine and raise the engine revs slowly, repeat this with the vehicle in gear, then engage four wheel drive, and repeat; this will identify whether the problem is in the drivetrain, or when the vehicle is running on the road.

Usually, problems like this are not one individual thing, they are often a combination of things.

F50 Vibrations

The problem has been solved it was the rear prop shaft probably slightly bent, thanks for all the help everyone.
