Forum:
Hi,
Being new to owning a YRV, and this being my first Daihatsu, i thought it prudent to join the site and ask you guys (the experienced owners and experts) what i should look out for and if there is anything i should know?
The car i have bought is a 2001 YRV Premium 1.3 in black. Unfortunately it's had a little of the "Halfords treatment" with aftermarket alloys, silly over sized pedals and cheaply tinted windows. So the first thing i did was peel off the window film, unbolt and bin the pedals and tear out the silly little blue neons in the footwells! Now the car is looking a little more like it should. The wheels will get changed at some point to something a little more suited. I'm also on the lookout for a replacement luggage cover as mine is missing.
As this is the 1.3 Premium (the Turbo would have been my choice my my budget wouldn't allow it this time) it's not the quickest car i've driven and haveing changed form a Civic 1.8 VTi it feels a little slower than i'm used to. So if anyone has any suggestions for an easy, cheap and effective increase in power then i'd be very interested to hear your ideas. Other than a Longlife Stainless Steel exhaust (cat back system) the car is standard. It's done a very sensible 66k miles and has a good history. Only puzzling thing is the service book is stamped as having not had the cambelt done at 60k but had a timing chain fitted, is this normal? I'll be honest, other than checking for signs of head gasket failure (car before the Honda was a Rover 25 GTi so i've learn about head gaskets at the cost of replacing a head!) and any fluid / coolant / oil leaks i haven't investigated the engine in too much depth so far - if starts perfectly and drives well "if it ain't broke then don't fix it!!".
So what else should i be on the look out for?
Having searched, and failed, to find a Turbo that i can afford i have also considered the option of fitting a Turbo and Intercooler to the car i have. This would also be more preferable to a Turbo model as it's a manual. The question is, would the unit form a Turbo engine be a straight fit and would the standard 1.3 manual box take the extra power? If not, is there a company that does Turbo / Supercharger conversions for these? I did hear that TurboTechinics were developing a small sized Supercharger but i understand this is purely for the K Series - is there anyone else that does these for the K3VE engine and what price should i be looking at?
Thanks in advance for any info you can supply.

Hi there,
welcome to the site.
You should have held out for a Turbo and i know that one of the best ones in the country is up for sale soon? No its not mine
Sounds like yours has had a boy racer thrash.
YRV K3VE/VET have a timing chain not a belt so thats ok, although theres no recommendation when to have that done.
It still seems to be early days for reports of major failures etc.
The coolant and brake fluid should be changed every 2 years, gear box oil at 54,000mls/6yrs,
For peace of mind i would also change the oil 5w/30, plugs Iridiums are best they last longer, air filter if its dirty.
Alot more to converting to a Turbo than just slapping one on.
It would cost a fortune to sort, cheaper to get the real thing and with that you get the better suspension set up and the tasty bonnet scoop etc!!
Cheers,
Dave.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the reply and the helpful comments - if it hadn't been for the wife holding the purse strings i'd have found the extra couple of grand for a turbo - but she's the boss
Just one further question, i've got to take it for the tracking to be done in the next couple of days and also want to get the brakes looked at. Having looked in the forum i find that others are having the same issues - these being that the front left (NSF) seems to make a horrible grinding noise on braking - this doesn't happen all the time and when i test drove it it was only a very light (and occasional) rubbing, the seller had just fitted a new pad so i put it down to this. However it seems to be getting slightly worsr and more pronounced. Is this a regular fault or is it just that the piston(s) are probably worn on that calliper and sticking? Would be useful to know before i take it to my mechanic as it will save him some time diagnosing (and me some money!).
Thanks again.
Paul
