Rear Light Cluster

Forum:

Would these lights be legal if I did a bumper mod and put someting like these on the body as my main lights?

or............................

Light Work

Ensure the lights are E marked, this is a capital E mounted in a circle, cast into the lamp somewhere, if so they are legal in Europe.

Lighting regulations are complex, and often exaserbated by a vehicles age, this complicates things more.
Certain Fourtrak models had lights installed in the rear quarter panel, about halfway up the rear door, others were installed in the rear bumper with blanks fitted in the body. Remove the body blanks (if fitted) and install them in this position, they will then be legal; ensure a rear fog light is fitted to the offside, and a reversing light to the nearside.

You should then be legal, the vehicle was originally type approved with lights in this position, and will comply with all legislation.

The change in position of

The change in position of the rear lights, from body down to rear bumper, came in part due to a change of regulations in Australia. With the introduction of red light cameras, cameras that automatically take 2 photos 1 second apart if your vehicle if you go through a red light, here in Autralia, the law needed to see, as part of any court process, if you had applied your brakes prior to going through the red light. With rear door mounted spare wheels obscuring the right hand light cluster, as viewed from the camera position, there could be an arguement that your left hand brake light bulb had just blown, so therefore there was no certainty that you had applied the brakes, as no lit brake light would be showing. The moving down to the bumper stopped this arguement, as obstruction by the spare wheel became a non issue.

Fourtrak rear lights

Thank you bundyrumandcoke for the explanation of the rear light positioning on the Fourtrak.I have owned one for over 10 years and always wondered why the rear light clusters migrated to the rear half bumpers and why the lights in the body had no fittings, amazing what the internet can answer!

Light Work

And will just plug straight in?

No. But it's a simple job

No. But it's a simple job to wire them up from the bumper lights (as if doing a trailer socket), or from a trailer socket. Aulternativly if your flush, Daihatsu can supply the wiring harness for putting the lights in the pillers.

Found using 7 core (trailer

Found using 7 core (trailer light wiring) was the easiest way. All in one thick bundel makes easier to push wiring up into place, and all colour coded to boot.
