Forum:
My fan belt recently broke on my F78 Fourtrak and as i noticed that the PAS belt had to be removed to fit the new fan belt, i thought i would change both. I ordered the appropriate belts from Milner Offroad and set about fitting them. The fan belt was quite a close fit but i did eventually get it on however, the PAS belt is proving a sight more difficult. I have loosened the pump adjusting bolt and the pump is swung all the way in and the belt still seems a country mile off fitting, can anyone suggest anything to help?
Thanks,
Philmob.

Scissors and glue??????? No

No seriously, mine was a bugger to fit as well. Eventually prised it over the crankshaft pulley with a screwdriver, I think. I thinks its because the PS pulley is so deep, that its a pain to fit.

PAS Belt
They can be tight because of the width and ribs but I have nevr found them to be that tight and if forced could either knacker a bearing or worse snap. I would be inclined to check that the correct item was sent by Milner. It would be worth measuring it and making sure that an incorrect one has not been placed in the box inadvertantly. I have had similar troble with a fan belt for a Sporty from Milner and gave up as there was no way it was going to fit. The old one looked new so that went back on. OK so far

PAS pump belt change
I encountered exactly the same problem and it took me a while to recollect how I fitted a new PAS belt. If I remember correctly I completely removed the adjuster bolt which allowed the PAS pump to be moved closer to the crankshaft drive pulley. The new belt could then be fitted and after the adjuster bolt is refitted, the tension can be adjusted correctly. It appears the adjuster is just that, an adjuster and does not allow sufficient travel in the PAS pump to accommodate the fitting of a new belt.
Good luck, hope this helps.
Thanks for the help
This is the first time i have used the forum and i am grateful for the suggestions i have received. In the end i followed the advice of removing the pump adjuster and i also slackened the bolt that the pump pivots on. I put the belt fully on the pump pulley and as much as possible on the flywheel and then using a 24mm socket i turned the flywheel which dragged the belt on. i was supprised to find that even though i thought the belt was too small, the pump went quite away back down the adjuster to get tension back on it.
Thanks again for the help
PAS belt sizes
When i tried buying power steering and alternator belts, everywhere i went had the WRONG sizes listed. Milners and my local motor factors all gave me belts that were slightly undersize for both. They gave me a 15A1080, can't remember the other size, was slightly under as well. i found a post on here somewhere detailing the correct belt sizes 15A1135 for the larger one i think. It was much much easier to fit the corrrect size belts! It seems like daihatsu measure the belts internal diameter and the motor factors use the external diameter, so when they cross reference the codes they are actually too small!

Heres the post i mentioned ........
There's a foulup in the UK parts for 4trak independents

Been caught with that problem on my 1997 independent.
I've just nipped out to the vehicle and reading the numbers on the QH wrappers from the belts that fit.
Alternator QBC1113
Steering pump QBB800
I'm pretty sure the numbers are the length in millimetres.
QB is for Quinton Hazell Belt
C is for 'C' section which is wide
B is for 'B' section which is narrower
A is for 'A' section skinny belts which were fitted to British Leyland rubbish.
