Sporty won't start

Forum:

Hi, I have just fitted a new water pump to my Sportrak EXLi and when I have come to restart is it just turns over. I am pretty sure the timing belt didn't move, but does any one know the alignment settings as I don't have a manual, yet and I need to get the car running as soon as possible. I have noticed the engine warning light (amber) is on too but I have only disturbed one wire and it runs from the oil pressure sensor, (oil light goes out while cranking the engine). This has me foxed so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Immobilised.

Sound like you have immobilised the engine. Does the Sporty have an engine immobiliser. I have known at least two owners accidently knocking a hidden switch which turns on the immobiliser and they did not know it was fitted. They spent £££'s getting the engine checked, even the garage remaind unaware of the immobiliser.

PS .. I have the full version of the workshop manual on CD. You need a copy if setting replacing cam belts etc.

sporty won't start

Hi thnx for the reply, my imobiliser is in the car and needs a special key to operate it. I am going to invest in a cd manual as i have one or too small jobs to do, once i get it running again

Distributor.

Did you remove the distributor?
Its common to refit so its fires on the exhaust stroke rather than the inlet. If incorrectly fitted it would explain why it will not start.

non starter

If you a pretty sure the belt and gears didn't move then you probably have a lead off unnoticed to some sensor. Check the LT plug is secure in the bottom of the coil and that all connections along it are secure. Check round the engine bay and then disconnect the neg lead for 10 seconds , reconnect and see if that cures it. This will reset the ECU.

The orange engine light also shows faults by shorting out the diagnostic plug. I did an explanation of what lights mean what from the paper manual and will send it to you if I can find the link
