Question about Sportrak Four Wheel Drive

Forum:

Hello, just got a 1995 Sportrak (see my recent "Stopping By To Say HI" post to see her)

The previous owner has owned it from new but says that he never put it into the 4WD mode. So, I've got some questions since he wasn't able to say much about it.

First, obviously, will never having used the 4WD have done any lasting damage, because I know the Owners manual says "For the lubrication of the front drive system, drive the vehicle under the four-wheel drive mode at least once a month"

Second, is there anything I should check before I switch it onto 4WD?

Third, I'm pretty sure it has an automatic locking hub, so the manual says to stop the vehicle before shifting from 2H to 4H; does this mean shutting off the engine, or just stop moving while letting the engine run?

Also, can the shift from 4H to 2H be done with the truck is moving, or does it need to be at a full stop for that as well?

Many thanks in advance for all your input!!

When shifting from 2h to 4h

When shifting from 2h to 4h or 4l the car has to be stationary but there is no need to turn the engine of. To change back in to two wheel drive with automatic locking hubs you must stop, shift in to 2h and then reverse 4 meters(or around that distance) to unwind the automatic locking hubs. I can’t help you about the lack of use of the 4wheel drive as I am a fairly new owner! However when I bought my car the 4wheel drive was not used and is works fine. I am sure the knowledgeable people of this forum will correct me if wrong!

Cheers for that! I had read

Cheers for that! I had read the reversing bit in the manual but I don't think it sunk in, thanks for reminding me about it.

I'll give it all a go this weekend and see what I can break!

4wd

I have 2 Sporties one with Manual the other with Auto.

It is a good policy to run it in 4 wheel drive occasionally to prevent the hubs, particualarly the auto's, from seizing. Dont run in 4 wheel drive continiously or you will wind them up and cause damage on normal roads. On Manuals you have to turn the dial from lock to free on the centre of the hubs to relaese them and have freewheeling front hubs. On Auto's you, as previously said , reverse up to 4mtrs to free them. You should have on the drivers door a large sticker detailing the operation of the hubs, auto & manual.
