Electrical Problem!?!?

Forum:

1998 Fourtrak having problems with the battery!

When running it shows that the battery is charging however, when turned off, even after a good run the battery is as flat as a pancake and wont even turn the engine once!!

Once the key is turned the volt meter drops to zero and nothing works.

The thing is that this is a new battery!!

Once thing I have noticed is that the module (possibly a solenoid?) bolted to the side of the car near the battery makes some pretty loud clicks when the key is first turned. The module is the one that has some connections to the live terminal of the battery. It clicks so hard that there is dust coming off the unit!!!

Also, when this is clicking the ignition lights on the dash dim.

Could this be the problem??

If it is what is this unit called??

When checking it out yesterday I noticed that the unit has Toyota on the lable. Very strange!!

Any help or advice greatly received!!

Thanks

You will see from the above that i am NOT techical in any way!!

First up, Daihatsu are

First up, Daihatsu are majority owned by Toyota, and they share plenty of parts.

And secondly, it sounds very much like a battery problem - still. Is this a NEW battery, or just another one? Have you given it a good charge? The relays are clicking like mad because of the lack of current for some reason. Let us know about the definition of a 'new' battery, and we'll take it from there.

Hi Dave It is New New i.e

Hi Dave

It is New New i.e bought for £70 cash from a shop, fully charged and tested.

However, if I out a second battery on via jump leads the car will start. This secondary battery will NOT start the car by itself. I have tried that.

I have tried a fully charged heavy duty battery and that didnt work either!

The relay/solenoid or whatever it is clicks as soon as the ignition is turned on. I dont have to turn the key to try and start the car to make it start.

Interestingly the electric windows, radio still work as normal without any loss of speed in the windows even though there appears to be little or no juice coming from the battery.

The clicking solanoid sounds

The clicking solanoid sounds like the pre-heat / glow plug relay. This is normally on the drivers side iner wing (right hand drive). This should click on and off several times to aid cold starting, and fast engine warm up once running. That said, lack of suficient power to the starter will result in a frantic clicking of the starter solinoid. This will only occer when the key is turned to the start position. The clicking will come from around the starter it self.
The fact that your windows go up and down just as fast makes me think either knackered battery, or bad connection somewhere. It seems that your getting voltage, but little current. You need mucho current to turn that Diesel over.
To check the battery put a multi meter on it. It should say around 11.5 - 12.5 volts. Get some one to turn the key to start while you watch the voltage. If it only dropes by about a volt then it's probably OK. If the voltage dropes right off, then the battery in knackered.
The check the posibility of a bad conection (usually earth) use a set of booster cables to connect the battery straight to the starter. Put the earth booster to the body of the starter, as the starter may not be earthing to the engine block properly. If this does the trick, try bypassing diffrent cables with one of the booster cables in order to find the culprible conection. I'd suggest starting with the chassis - engine block earth, across one of the engine mounts.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

Simmular problem!!!

My battery was ok until i left the headlights on for like 8 hours after driving through the heavy rain, then the car wouldn't start clearly and as you described the dash lights remained dim and there was a loud repetivly clicking sound so then i jumped my fourtrak 97 tdx from my tractor at full revs for about 5 mins and she started then took the truck for a drive and notived when i put my foot down the vortmeter would increse an dremain high so carried on driving for a bit and since Saturday when jumped it, its been fine.
i was worried by the loud clicking though but its sorted itself out.
hope this eases you slightly.

You could try and clean

You could try and clean the main earth points to and from the battery and engine, also the starter terminals.I hope this works Jason

Terminals Cleaned!!

I have removed all terminals and earths and all are cleaned (although they didnt seem to need it).

Battery fully charged and in good working order.

Still the same problem. Lots of clicking from this one solenoid (or whatever it is) and no power to turn the engine over.

Very frustrating!!
