Its a Petrol
Hello all. i made up a snorkel for a sporty, it wasnt hard at all, its just a case of making sure that when you put your hand over the air inlet the engine stops.
i first removed the crap ditsu air box and fitted a "cold air feed" filter from motor world, to the black box on top of the rocker cover, then i used a hole saw to cut a 50mm diameter hole through the body work. i cut my whole where the vin plate for the car is just above the bulk head! do not go through the bulk head, and make sure you remove the vin plate and move to the left.of hole. when doing this you will have to cut about 4-5mm out of the bracket that holds the bonnet on.
] when you get through the first peice of metal you will find a metal ridge behinf this, so be brutal and cut through this, not easy as you cannot use the drill to create a pilot hole as a guide. then proceed to the outer body work, i cut my whole right on the ridge where the metal starts to form the wing. then with a bit of enginuity you can you the old bends etc of the old air essembly to join you new filter to the black box then out through the bends.
but to be honest i wouldnt bother, as sportys have to many crap electricals, and the engines just arent sealed very well. as last monday i killed my sporty again driving through a local river. and before that i killed it driving through a lake. if you wana go swimming get a diesel.
as before all of my swimming expedtions i give a the electricals a good does of silicone spray to try and water proof everything and everytime i dies for 1 reason or another if the water is below the headlights not a problem above that and you havent got a hope im affraid. well maybe once if your lucky!
after my river expedition it stalled as i was emerging from the river got it towed out, took it home and the water had got everywhere, in the region of 3litres came out of the sump!! incidentally the head was dry as a bone tho so the snorkel had done its job. and before anyone asks no i did not stop in the middle and yes i did have a nice bow wave infront of the vehicle, its just that water is one of those unstoppable forces that WILL cost you money if you wana play in it!
So sportrak diesel conversion here i come, just got to decide on what donor vehicle i want!!
Hope that helps and sorry for ranting owen.
