Turbo problem or not?

Forum:

I have a standard old shape 2.8TD Fourtrak LWB (1991) that I'm 'concerned' about.

Having spoken to other people owning the same model, I'm told that when the turbo cuts in you can really feel it pull. I've never driven any other Fourtrak so can't be sure whether it's just their opinion.

I do several road miles as well and can only really hear the turbo whine, not feel it as well. Following the manuals, I checked the Boost Compensator holds pressure (through pipes as well) and that the Waste gate actuator moves at the right pressure.

What is everybody elses opinion of the turbo? Can you feel it pull and if so at what revs does it start?

Anything else I can check?

Many Thanks.

I am sure if you had a turbo problem, you would know. Smoke /lack of power. On mine the turbo seems to kick in about 2000/2200rpm, thats when the turbo whine is first noticeable, never really noticed a power surge. But she pulls like the proverbial train, when the turbo is on song, shame about the max MPH.

Horses for courses, she was never built as a motorway cruiser, just a puddle jumper and a mud plugger.

Try a non turbo

I've just transplanted a Turbo intercooler engine into my Non turbo SWB. The difference isn't shattering however the New turbo engine pulls much stronger than the non turbo with no real "kick" as the turbo comes on boost. I work as a salesman for Peugeot who (and I'm sure there will be many that will want to debate this) build and have a reputation for building a superb diesel engine. I drive a current electronic HDi peugeot as a company car and belive me you get to know about turbo lag compared to a good old Fourtrak.
Your fourtrak will never pin you in the seat as you hit the gas pedal but it will give you progressive power. Believe me you would know if you had no turbo... I should know .....I've just come from that place.
Out of interest what vehicle did you drive before you got your fourtrak?

DL51 & DL52 - what're the differences?

Looked up the part number of my turbo on it's maker's site (turbo is not original) and according to their catalogue my turbo is for the DL51 engine, not the DL52 engine which mine is (they list a different turbo for the DL52 engine).

Is their any differences between these 2 engines that would affect the operation of the turbo-charger?

Thanks Again.
