Forum:
Well, taking on the advice of you all here (and thanks to those who answered all my questions and helped out) I bought and fitted a R-1380 K&N Air filter.
Fitting time took no more than 25 mins, first time I've ever done anything like this to a car engine, some of the screws were rusty and cut my knuckle (violins yeah!) on it but was it all worth it?
Hell yeah! The difference isn't mindblowing but it's definately noticable, I put my foot down in second and the back end started fishtailing, and under "safe" conditions managed to get it up about 95 before I bottled out thinking I was gonna blow the engine, it was still accelerating even at that speed x.x
All in all, definately worth the £37.99 from Motorworld, now to ponder a de-cat...
PS. merry xmas to you all

Stone.
Is there a way to get it
Is there a way to get it removed in such a way that it can easily be added back for things like MOT's and Emissions tests?

CAT REMOVAL &K&N
Yes do it but if you need it for the MOT then those bolts rust solid and you could crack or damage the union plate either end and then need a replacement. You will no doubt skin your knuckles as well.
If you are pre the requirement date, (check with the MOT station) then cut it off, if not then I would stick with it and the K&N modification. Sporties will do over the 100MPH but are not that stable at high speed as they are quite heavy and tall and really better off road like most older 4x4;s.
I used a K&N 57i kit from a MINI on mine and as you say not mind blowing but allowing the engine to breath is noticable.(TOO NOISY ON THE MINI) Not too sure what the French will make of it when the MOT is due but will face that when it comes up. Till then K&N will reman on both my Sporties, and unfortuanately the CATS
