CV boot condition

Forum:

Hi, My '98 Fourtrak owned from new with just 31K miles has outer cv boots that show signs of cracking in the fold but not splitting yet. Is it wise to replace these now and if so the inner ones too Unknw EBay sites show the same boot suits both inner and outer and on the car it looks like this - is this correct.

Any help appreciated.

Heard the saying?..."If it

Heard the saying?..."If it ain't broke don't fix it"

Slight crack appearance in the folds is normal, could last a while yet before they split.

CV Boots

Is the outer boot the same type as the inner one Unknw

It is wise to replace them as

It is wise to replace them as its an easy job to do and cheaper than finding them split and the U/J's shot and needing replacement.

Go under the vehicle and remove the four studs on the drive flange, this will release the shaft from the inner end, cut the outer CV boot and clean the joint and pull it out, the shaft is now removed. Remove the retaining clip and the outerjoint will slide off the shaft, clean and put to one side.
Cut the inner CV boot off and clean the joint, slide the new boot on and fill with grease, fit into position and attach the new CV boot clip; fit the outer boot over the shaft, put the joing and retaining clip onto the shaft and install back onto the vehicle, fill the outer CV boot with grease and fit the CV boot back over the flange and fit the boot retaining clamp.

Takes about 30 minutes per side.

CV Boot replacement

That's very helpful. There is some confusion with my boot supplier as to whether the inner boot is the same as the outer. The boots I shall buy are universal and cut to size. Can you assist again please.

Also are the boots easy to fit over the CV joints as I know gargaes need to use boot air inflator tools.

Thanks again
