Looks like the fun is over...before it started!

Forum:

Well, finally got the verdict on the weird noise from my YRV Turbo when it changes gear from second to third...and its not good news.

The ATF Fluid / Gearbox has water in it, so pretty much need a whole new gearbox, or needs to be rebuilt! Looking at a serious amount.

So looks like I am going to sell the YRV Turbo cheap, (I wouldnt try and hide problems from buyers), and buy something else. I dont really want to spend that sort of money on it as it didnt cost me much. Maybe someone can buy it as a project. The weird thing is the car runs perfect, just know it will give up eventually.

So if anyone wants some Tein S Lowering Springs or GodSpeed Disc Brakes and Pads give me a shout. Will do some good prices! Same for the car Wink

I must admit, the YRV is great little car. Pity there aint more about. I did see a Sirion 1.3SL for sale, so maybe will still be a Daihatsu Owner.

Again, I would like to say thanks for all you guys help on here. Its a great forum for advice and help!

Dont give up on it! The

Dont give up on it!

The Autobox is water cooled.... you'l see 2 pipes come out of the bottom of the radiator.
Try an Autobox specialist...it might only be a small seal.
Who did you buy this car off, private or Dealer??

Re oil cooler

Hi Chap,
I can see your point of view, possible repair options? Is the F speed/Sirion gearbox the same as turbo one and I guess that the oil cooler inside the coolant radiator is damaged allowing engine coolant into autobox, so as a temp repair by pass cooler (join hoses together) or fit external air to oil cooler old school style. flush ATF and see if shifting is improved.
Hope this gives you some ideas, what other cars could even come close to ur pocket rocket?
Cheers CUS

Cheers for all your help!

I took the car to a gearbox specialist, he is the best in this area, probably scotland.

He said he could replace the ATF and add an additive. Would purge the system. However still said that it would never be right.

He also said that he reakons that the car may have been flooded or such like. He is not sure how it could have happened, however just theories.

Since getting the car the noise from 2nd to 3rd is getting worse, I use steershift to go from 2nd to 3rd and lift my foot of the accelerator pedal. Actually using steershift is a lot better than full auto mode. It seems to take a second or so for full auto to change.

I just think its gonna get worse, and unluckly think I have bought a dud! I knew of some faults, and didnt mind doing them. The exhaust also needs replaced. I think the best thing to do on this occassion is to cut my losses.

Going away to look at cars today, hopefully get a trade in. I will miss the YRV, especially now the wife is talking about getting a Vauxhall Vectra! eughh...

Thanks again guys!

Sorry to hear that you are getting rid

It's a shame your having to get rid sounds like an experience I had test driving a Suzuki Ignis Sport before buying the YRV Turbo. There are other ones out there, you could try trading that one for another. Wink

I wouldn't bother with a Vauxhall Vetra though! Neighbour of mine had his turbo go @ 70Mph on the motorway. Worth doing a bit of research first Smile

Why do you lift off during changing 2nd to 3rd? Just curious..........

You in Canada Jon? Wink

Umm Yes I don't lift off

Umm Yes I don't lift off either. I suppose it comes from driving a manual.

Wayne, yes I am currently on my hols in Canada at the moment. Currently in Vancouver (8 hours behind). They don't have Daihatsu Cars over here. Plenty of Toyotas though. Interestingly enough Toyota sell a brand called 'Scion', a fews adds on the television over here. Basically like Daihatsu cars. Theres one that's basically a Daihatsu Materia. They only started to sell them last year. It's Toyotas way of selling smaller cars to the 'Y' generation? The Toyota IQ is being re-badged as a 'Scion' for the market Smile

I don't lift off - you're not

I don't lift off - you're not supposed to. Do more harm than good I reckon. Keep it well and truly in the carpet!
Plenty of Toyota there. I went to Cambridge, Ontario and there's a huge Toyota plant there. Have a nice time Wink

I dont lift off

Nah, sorry what I was meaning was when I do lift off the noise goes away. When I have the foot down, which I would normally do, it makes the noise.

Anyway, thats the gearbox really starting to go now. Cant use steershift for longer than 10-15mins. All that happens is that the D light flashes and the gear selector indicator on the trip display dissappears. If I try an go high on the revs or fast in auto or steershift the car starts making a very loud whishy hissy sound. Cant really have any fun anymore.

However, the car aint gonna be sold yet! My wifes parents have farm grounds and a spare shed come garage. So going to declare the car off road and see what I can do. Might try and get it fixed up in the next 6 months or so. See if I can find someone to do the gearbox on the cheap, I have a few contacts. I dont want to see another YRV Turbo scrapped, its too good for that as its a great little machine. Plus the trade in price wasnt worth it, and would prob just go to auction or whatever.

But...I will be selling the Tein S springs and Discs and Pads as I need the money to make it better. Will put these on ebay soon.

Will keep you up to date on the progress.

Oh and I didnt buy a Vectra...but the wife did pick the car so I wont be telling you what it is. Actually to drive its nice, but it aint no fun!

Sorry to hear that the car

Sorry to hear that the car isngoing off road. Hope you get it sorted soon. As for the springs and brakes. Worth giving Mark Bishop a shout as he is after those sorts of things for his car Wink
