autohubs questions

hi, question, are auto hubs sided, if so how do you tell the difference about which sides which, the reason i ask is last week i picked up a set that look brand new, fitted them in place of mine on my fourtrack fieldman, as one was damaged, , and now they dont seem to be coming out of engagement, not siezed, if i take the end cap off i can if i jack the front wheels up move the centers with my fingers and disengage them, what actually is the mechanical part that disengages them, does anyone know,yes i am backing up to get them out but its not working, wel greased , no apparent damage or rust etc inside the hubs

figured out the `spring` is for pulling them off, however its where it locates when refitting the hubs got me puzzled.theres two places could be right, theres a heavy stub on the inner part the hub which moves, also an outer sheet metal piece which also moves, hope this makes sense, the spring tang can fit either side of the heavy stub, obviously ones got to be wrong

The spring tang should be

The spring tang should be fitted one either side of the lug, these rely on relative motion to work; i.e. the driveshaft has to turn to engage them, therefore they work both ways, when the vehicle goes forward it engages in one plane, when in reverse it is the opposite plane.
When the driveshafts stop turning, irrespective of which plane they are operating, they return to the central position due to the spring, and the hubs are not engaged until the driveshafts turn again, and engage them on one or other plane.
