I'd try running without a stat befor bying a new one. As for the fan, viscous type? They are well known for giving up. Easy to see if yours has. Drive around to get her hot, then use a broom handle or such, very gently (you don't want to lose a finger or such) let the fan rub against it. If the viscous coupling has leaked away it will not take much pesure to stop the fan going around. If this is the case, you can:
1) Replace the fan with anouther (new) one.
2) Replace the fan with an electric (Kenlow) fan, trermostaticly switched.
3) Unbolt and split the 2 halves of the viscouse fan body, and sandwich some rubber matting / carpet into the gap, making it into an old fashoned constant running fan.

Which choice depends on how deep your pockets are, how mecanically minded you are, and whether you mind bodery or not...

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

Thanks

Thanks for your help have tested thermostat is not working as it should so have ordered one from Graham Dewhurst so will try new one and if not then I will get a new fan

Thanks again

Thermostat

Fit a new thermostat. Towing creates more heat so first make certain the old thermostat is fully operational. Get CORRECT TYPE of thermostat for diahatsu. It a longer reach than normal thermostats. Cost about £20 each. Using a conventional thermostat for 'normal' motors will overheat the engine ...... assuming a new thermostat was also fitted, did the mechanic fit the wrong type of thermostat?

thanks

Have ordered a new thermostat from Graham Dewhurst
so will try that

Overheating

Firstly what vehicle. It may be an airlock in the system that is causing the problem so until you have ensured that the system is clear of air locks before getting a new fan fitted.
