high fuel consumption

hi guys, new to this forum and it looks great. mines a 1.3 and well it uses alot of fuel, as in half a tank would get used up in about 2 hours of normal driving! i'm sorry, i don't have killometers to a tank but trust me its too much for such a little engine. i've changed the fuel filter and that helped it but its been a month and its coming back to usuing same amounts just like before.

In the mornings or when the engines cold, it starts up easy but doens't idle high like a cold engine should and when i take off it pops and backfires for a few seconds then picks up. once the engine is warm its all good but i have a feeling the cold problem has got something to do with the high fuel consumtion.
what do you think i should focus on?
thanks guys

i adjusted the timing but its making it worse!

yehh so i've got the manual, i pluged the inner hose and when i went to check the timming, it was way out soo, i lined up the notch with the only mark on the timming cover and it made it worse, poped so much more so then i went back other way and now its running much better. i don't think what i've done solved the problem, i think its just a coverup but i'm pretty sure the problem is ignition timming related. so what can i do now?
thank you all

Timing

I assume you used a strobe to check the timing. Some vehicles have to be checked at a higher rev than tickover, some 1000 RPM for example. I assume you have a manual and can Id entify the marks as the marks you checked it against. Normally you have a number of points, TDC, and then various degrees befeore TDC. I am not familier with the engine in ? but it still sounds like the timing to me. DId you check the state of the plugs?

Chack also the leads for cracks allowing a discharge of the HT to the body and that will also cause hesitation as the plug fails to fire. If this is the case usually you will find one plug obviously worse than the others ie black/sooty.

tIMING

Additional to all the other good advice you may want to check the timing as it may be running to advanced which would waste more fuel and make it hesitant. Check the plugs, are they black with carbon? they should be sandy brown, white means running to lean, retarded, black running to rich, advanced.

still having problems

soo, after the cts change it became good and much better on fuel. buuuut, recently its developed that hesitations and sometimes backfiring when cold. the fuel consumption is still good and it revs higher when cold but yeh i wonder what other sensor would cause this, any ideas?
thanks heaps
,jack

thanks heaps, it doesn't

thanks heaps, it doesn't have a choke so i'll look into the cts Smiling
