welding to floor pan

Forum:

hi, having now removed all the seats and carpets on my 91 2.8 fourtrak, i have found quite a lot more rust that needs to be cut out and welded, than i first thought, what is the correct way to do it for the mot,
can i weld the floor from the top or bottom or do i have to plate both the top and bottom,

many thanks,

chrisac.

Welding

Hi there,
I have done a total refurbishment of my Rocky and I welded one plate from the top and spot welded from the bottum and that was OK for the mot here in Denmark. If you can stay away from double plating, since it will rust mutch faster. Since the car has a solid frame the body itself is not lifting anything and therefore they do not care.
Good luck,
Per.

WELDING......WHAT WELDING?

HI PER,
thanks for your info, so far i have compleatly rebuilt the r/h rear wheel arech, also reconected the floor to the wheel arch, starting on the l/h one tomorow, then only four plates to weld on floor, 2 at the base of the rear arch (one each side) under the panel for the rear seat, and then 2 small plates about 8 x 10cm on a nice bit of flat floor,,
thanks again for the advice,

chrisac

You can weld it from inside for the mot no problem.

Best way is to spend a bit of time and get the new plate about 1mm bigger all round, then stich weld it so it end up completely welded all the way round. Get some seam sealer and put this on the underneath in a nice neat continous seam, then underseal.

When u get it in the mot ststion the tester can then see / feel the patch and you wont hjave a problem. I have welded many many cars this way. Also, with the small overlap you virtualy eliminate the double skin problems later.

hi,
thanks for the info, just done the l/h rear wheel arch-floor pan today, slow job as its years since i did any welding but were getting there,i like the idea of putting seam sealer underneath then the underseal, nice one thanks, the right hand wheel arch is not exactly the true correct shape as the original, but its near enough at least you can now hit it with a lump hammer with little effect, the real headache for me i think will be the plate that i have to put on the floor, under the bench seat near the central pillar, ive got the shaping right for curve at the bottom of the wheel arch, ive then just got to try and get the plate depressed so it fits to the original shape, or its not going to look right from underneath.

thanks & best regards,
